Resolution Issues with New Video Card

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 12:27 am

Hi everyone I need some assistance and possibly an explaination as to why im experience these issues. I bought Fallout 4 on pre-order knowing that later on I would need to get a new video card in order to run it. Considering I had only a GT 420 video card which is extremely low end. Though it runs Fallout 3 / NV and Skyrim really well.

Having the game in my possesion I got impatient and decided to check out how it would run on my low end card. To my surprize running the game on complete low settings allowed the game to start up (no crashes, no freezes). The game was working well and looked okay for something I expected to not even run. When too much was happening on the screen the FPS would drop as expected. But the game still worked and never crashed and the resolution options were of a wide range.

I then decided okay, its time to finally get a newer card, one that is above the minimum requirement, So I can at the least increase the texture quaility and improve the FPS. I purchased a Nvidia GeForce GT 740 as i was not able to afford the desirable 900 series. But figured its a step up from what I currently am using that was able to at the least bit run Fallout 4. First off Fallout 4 was unable to identify this new card, where as the first card it was able to scan it and set all settings accordingly.

Here is where all the problems started. Immediantely after installing the video card and updating the drivers and launching Fallout 4. I noticed the resolution options were limited to only two settings. Two settings of which were not sit to scale with the resolution of my screen. Using one of these options in windowed mode worked okay. But I do not wish to run in windowed mode. Playing the game in full screen in the higher resolution out of the two options would make the game full screen but push some of the graphics such as the start up screen and some of the background HUD graphics to the right of the screen. I also experienced stutter which didnt occur on my low end 420 card. Also the UI for the dialogue wheel was incredibly small and unreadable for options that were already selected which go darker.

This whole experience leads me to beleive the game was optimized for console use at a fixed graphic settings with a fixed GPU. I have never experienced issues like this with any other game or any other Bethesda game. If anyone can provide me help for a solution that would be great. I have taken a look in the INI file and played around with the resolution scaling there but haven't found a result that would solve all my problems.

For it seems the only way to play the game is in windowed mode, which also shows the UI dialogue options as being really small. Funny how the resolution was perfect on a lower end card, but on a newer one everything is out of whack. I should have listened to those Steam reviews before pre-ordering the game. I didnt expect the negative reviews to be true. I'm disappointed with my purchase and I ordered physically in advance.

FYI: I'm a mod developer so this is even more disappointing for me. (developed mods such as Realistic Impacts for Skyrim and many others for Fallout3 / NV)

Specs: i7 -2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz - Windows 7 - 8GB RAM.

I'd try copying the Fallout4.ini & the Fallout4Prefs.ini to desktop then delete the originals. Let the game re-detect your new GPU.

If it works just delete the old ini files.

Thanks I'll try that out and see what results I get. I'm aslo downloading a new driver from Nvidia which says its an update for games including Fallout 4. http://www.geforce.com/geforce-experience

EDIT: Deleting the ini files and resettng the options from the launch panel, didnt seem to fix Fallout 4's inability to detect my card, unfortunately. Downloading the new driver seems to have fixed the resolution scaling issue in full screen.

EDIT:

Problems all came back on second launch. For some reason it auto selects Windowed mode on its own at times. This is odd. UI backdrops are not alligned with their foreground text. All content is pushed to the right and im left with little resolution options to choose from. Though I'm assuming when you click full-screen it ignores what options you choose since the options disappear once you deactive windowed mode. I do not want to play in windowed mod.

This is the worst experience I've ever had with setting up a game in the history of setting up games and I've been playing PC games since 1991 without tedious issues like this. Will Bethesda be fixing these issues or not? Should I re-sell my game? I understand an update is coming next week but it would be nice to know more details about what fixes come with. I spent $90 Canadian on a game I cannot play.

I should also add my card supports DirectX 11. Anyone help would be appreiated. I cannot express what a horrible experience I'm going through just to get a game to play that is within the require specs. The fact that I was able to play the gay with perfect screen resolution with a lower than minimum required video card does not make any sense why anything higher would not work quickly.

Please any help

ISSUE SOLVED!

I removed the Fallout4Prefs.ini and "Fallout4.ini out of the My Documents/My Games/Fallout 4" folder. I was originally removing them from the "Steam/SteamApps/Common/Fallout 4" folder.

Didn't release there were these two directors holding the same files. This may actually help out a lot of people! Make sure to make the changes to your INI files in your My Games/Fallout 4 folder and not your Steam folder. The Steam folder one seems to make no difference.

Oh man. I had even started to add the location but as you had mentioned editing them I refrained.

Glad you got it sorted. :)

ALL my problems have come back out of no where! Is Bethesda going to fix this resolution issue? I am unable to get the full screen to play correctly. UI is off to the right and intro screen and vids are to the right and dialgoue wheel text is small and squished. What is going on...

Game was working perfectly fine after I deleted / moved those INI files. Now im back to the same problems and the preivous solution doesn't fix it. The game cant figure out what resolution to work with and its limiting my options all over again. This is a complete mess of a game. Any assistance would be great. Nothing is wrong with my card as its been able to play the game great for the past week.

I do not want to play this game in windows mode!
