The one bug that keeps coming back

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 2:50 pm

If auto-run is on, and you press Caps Lock in a menu screen, auto-run is turned off. If auto-run is off, and you press Caps Lock in a menu screen, then auto-run is turned on. So, Caps Lock is sometimes auto-run and sometimes auto-walk, and it can change from one to the other without the player's knowledge. The reassignment of Caps Lock is done outside of the Controls screen in an illogical, undocumented manner.

I see no reason for a game designer to design auto-run this way. The wonky behavior only makes sense when viewed as a bug or as an oversight.

There is no such bug.

Get a new keyboard or learn the controls. Bethesda cant fix it for you.

This can be changed in the ini file. For example, to change the setting in Skyrim you would open the SkyrimPrefs.ini file and change the line:

bAlwaysRunByDefault=1

to

bAlwaysRunByDefault=0

There is Bug, it's with the AutoRun Toggle (not the shift key). It is not a hardware issue.

If I remember correctly, I did try this. I belive it corrected the issue when you first load a game (it does load the correct value from the ini). However there would still be times when it switches back to AutoRun being ON.

As I mentioned before in my semi-coherent 6am post... :P there are a few times during the game when the autorun occasionally glitches and returns to Autorun being on, the ones that I remember are:

- Loading new area (Entering/Exiting buildings/caves/vaults/etc..)

- Times when you lose control of your character (Kill Moves, VATS)

- Loading a game (Believe this can be fixed for the first load after starting the game with the ini edit Morchai mentioned.

I can change the function of Caps Lock from "Always Run" to "Always Walk" and back again at will, just by tapping the key once while my inventory screen is open.

If you can't do it, then maybe you need a different keyboard.

If the switching bug actually exists (I have never experienced it), it must be limited to when AUTO WALK is selected as I ALWAYS have it in AUTO RUN and have never experienced this. Granted, the number of times I actually use SHIFT to not run is very few and far between (like when I'm sneaking and have to make SURE I'm not detected). Another possibility is that this MAY present itself if the user is ALT-TABing out of the game a lot (or using a 2nd screen while running in a windowed mode). The method that the OS and the game keeps up with the state of CAPS LOCK could easily be confused and cause a switch (that would not really 100% be a game bug or something Bethesda COULD fix).

If you always have Auto-Run on, then you would't notice it. When the glitch occurs it doesn't "toggle Autorun", it simply sets Auto-run on.

Autorun is On -> glitch -> Autorun is on
Autorun is Off -> glitch -> Autorun is on

It happens in FO3, FONV & Skyrim. It's happend with both single and dual monitor setup. Not sure about windowed mode there are few games I don't play full screen. It's not the state of Caps Lock (I re-map my autorun toggle to the "/" on the number pad to make sure I don't hit it.)

... and it just occured to me I may been calling it the wrong thing. Think most people know what I'm talking about but.. Isn't Autorun is where your character runs without hitting forward, what's the option I'm thinking of? Run/Walk toggle?

lol :lol:

I haven't run into to this bug either, but it's not impossible that others have. I've heard of all kinds of crazy bugs that I've never experienced and I've played hundreds of hours of both Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

I'm glad it occurred to you, because I had forgotten about that Autorun. :smile:

Skyrim's user manual calls Caps Lock the "Walk/Run Toggle." Fallout 3's manual calls Caps Lock "Always Run" (which is amusing, because "Always Run" isn't always "Always Run").

lol, Just got home from work & checked in Fallout 3. Yup, "Always Run" and "Auto Move"

I realize your just being facetious, but to answer your question: I still run more often than not, but I hold shift to do so. It's just what some people are used to, the same reason there's an Invert Y-axis option.
