Hopeful Brink Features

Post » Thu Jun 03, 2010 12:20 am

I'd like to see Heavies spawned closer to the frontline, so that they don't have to run as far, unless flanking time is already factored into the agile's "run" time to the frontline. The reason for this being that it seems a little pointless to spawn everyone at the same time if the weak lightweights are going to hit the frontline first, get gunned down waiting for the mediums, who get gunned down (having been outnumbered), and then the main fighting force arrives and is (yet again) outnumbered.

Most people simply don't think to wait for their teammates to get to the frontline.

If there is even a 1 second interval between the heavy and medium's arrival at the frontline (and similarly for a medium and agile's arrival), it might be hard for a competent team to put up a good fight. (I know I'm ignoring medics, but less time reviving means more time killing).

Just a hopeful suggestion, seeing as spawns can get messy and spawns are really easy to fix (although it might be difficult to create 3 spawn types (1 for each body type) for each team).

One of these "new members" just needs to straight up make a thread that says "Can Splash Damage go ahead and make CoD:MW3 SUPER SPRINT KNIFE GRENADE EDITION?" Because that seems to be what everyone keeps thinking. Doesn't everyone want something NEW? Different? Maybe a breath of fresh air? Instead everything is super sprint fest set your aim sensitivity to 100 percent freak out and shoot that noob tube as fast as you can. And all other games need to be this way. And you need to have a kill cam so you can see how the other spaz got you as if it'll make a difference.

Scouts and Heavies spawn in the same place on TF2, and it works out fine.

To me choosing a light class would obviously mean that I can get up at that front line 1st.. do some scouting or try and do something else (such as an objective) and this is the advantage I get as a light troop.
Giving heavy's the same opportunity to get in2 the fight at the same time is unfair from my perspective, although I agree with the premise of equal gameplay certain balance issues might hinder that type of gameplay.
Heavy users have more health compared to a light user which gives them an advantage, being agile is the advantage of the light player and having a little of both is the medium... To me having everyone spawn at the same time is fair and it would really svck if you get to spawn 1st just because you're wearing heavy... Light users would then be at an even greater disadvantage(other then less health)

just to clarify I wouldn't want to see killcam in this game.. and sure while innovation is great and I highly appreciate what splash damage is trying to do I still have to say that certain things should not be messed with..
But to answer yes I would like to see something new and different and I hope Brink does this in a cool way and is widely accepted... But I'm just concerned that because it strays to much of the path that not a lot of people will be playing this game.. I would like to see this game do great, just like other new IP's such as Heavy Rain which was an awesome game that brought something new 2 the table... the gaming industry is a very competitive one and I would hate to see this game get buried by games like COD which imo don't deserve the amount of sales it gets

i lik to see new things aswell, but honestly thats why cod is now a big franchise since cod4 introduce somethin new with the multiplayer customization.... im not sayin its amazin or anythin, im jus sayin they did come up with somethin new at that time.

and yeah im sure brink will do fine, ive talked to alot of ppl playin battlefield bc2 that are actually interested in brink on the 360

"Straying too far from the path" isn't a concern of mine for 2 reasons.

1. People who appreciate the innovation and gameplay that SD is offering, are going to enjoy it, regardless.
2. Those people who find it "too different" will go back to their COD and Halo's (or whatever they play) thus leaving the Brink community more tightly-knit and like-minded.

So at the same time, Brink's features and gameplay will be attracting players who genuinely enjoy the game, while "weeding" out the unwanted - it's a win-win.

@DarkSpirit

I would never continue or stop playing a game just based on the fact that they have persistent stats or not. Your argument that Brink will fail just from lacking leaderboards is quite shallow. Unless you are arguing that developers should make sure to include skinner conditioning in order to keep more people playing their games.

W:ET made by splash damage is still one of the top multiplayer games for PC, and it was made almost a decade ago, the only reason Halo has similar sales is because they follow the sequel philosophy of selling games. You also have to consider the budget differences between developers like SD (when they made W:ET) and the developers of the popular mainstream games you have listed. The fact that the two can even be compared shows how successful SD's way of doing things is.

Earlier you argued that many players can play a game with stats and not become obsessed with them. Not the point. As long as there are stats, there will be a portion of the fanbase that care more about keeping their KD high than actually helping the team or winning the match. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your your team at the moment will result in you being at a high risk of dying. Having any portion of your teammates hesitate to finish objectives because it risks lowering their KD is not a good thing.

Numbers are not needed to improve your skills, You know when you have done good and bad, if you survived or finished an objective you did well, if you died while attempting something you did badly. Paying attention to individual situations like that and figuring out what went right or what went wrong is the best way to get better, not obsessing over numbers. Most of the things that people need to work on in game are so abstract that they aren't shown by the numbers anyway.

Indeed, as long that the KDR stat is there, people will try to get that as high as possible, since they seem to think that this stat determines their skill level. I played W:ET as well and you didn't have KDR back then. When someone of my team needed health I often /killed myself because you drop health packs when you're dead. In competitive gaming there even was this mechanic were a medic shot his own teammates to revive them with more health.

Having KDR in this game will punish people who actually try to do the objectives or who are trying to be a good teamplayer.
Please bare in mind that killing will give you the fewest amount of xp and the scoreboard at the end lf the match will be ordered by gained xp (you get a lot more xp from doing teamwork or completing objectives)

:) it does, doesnt it. But you missed the other importatnt part. Perhaps you forgot to mention they can use teleports? :)
But on the other hand, I am sure SD managed to balance it right so you dont have to do more walking then shooting with the heavy.

I guess you spawn pretty close to the action, but far enough to not get killed instantly (defense turrets near spawn etc). It's one of the heavies trade offs, you will need more time to get back to the battlefield than the light.

There are also forward spawns which can be captured be either team.

You're spawn will also change when you complete certain main objectives. It's not that both teams spawn on opposite sides of the map. The action will also be focused around a certain part of the map.

Indeed. also could we start seeing a difference between stats and scoreboard pls? :) I am all for scoreboard based upon xp gained during the match, just basic info about teamwork, So it doesnt promote those naughty ppl who care about kills only. Not to mention they would probably be on the loosing team :) But Stats system, on the other hand, would be something you can see outside of the game or not playing in the menu. So if anyone has a good KDR and wants to be stupid about it, I wont know, because I will only see his XP during the game and how he helped the team, so thats brilliant idea. But out of the game I can look and see how is he doing, but I still dont care, wanna see how I am doing and my friends :) So its win win situation. When you have stats like this http://bfbcs.com/stats_pc/main_cz it hardly harms teamplay. In L4D2/TF2 you can find them in steam, but both outside the actual round you play, so you cant rly brag, because nobody will see, they will just know how you helped the team based on your exp and I like that idea.

Also on the idea that competitive gaming needs KDR, thats just not true as Dysfunkshion says. And as I said I am all for getting rid of it even in the stats system. Thats the only stat I really dont care about. Would be nice to follow kills for each body type/class/weapon etc but without the deaths. Same is in TF2 and nobody misses it. Just shows how many kills/points/assists/captures/backstabs... also how much I healed most in one life or how many building I destroyed as each class etc but not deaths. No mention at all. That solves your KDR worry.

As Brink is supposed to be a revolution, lets start the revolution by getting rid of KDR in gaming :)

I feel you on this one. KDR has never really been a big deal to me. As long as my team wins and I contributed, I'm satisfied.

In the long run I guess kdr doesn't really have much of an impact, but I just think the whole perception of it being a team game killer is not true... the game I play has a lot of kill based stats including KDR
And that game works just fine and teamwork is at it's best when playing this game... But I can see why one would think KDR might have negative influence...
As long as this game has some kind of stats system i'll be happy... if it's just some kind of end of the round xp thing and it then discards all of the earned stuff it would kinda be lame...
Trophies/medals is something I enjoy achieving also, and I haven't played the game so I don't know what kind of in-game reward system is in place but I hope it's an awesome one =P
To me KDR is still important and even though I know you might not agree I still think it should be a part of any shooter......

Mind you, this is a really old post, but here is what Richard Ham said about implementing leaderboards:

"I definitely worry about the existence of global leaderboards leading to exploitative behavior in matches. It's a shame, 'cause leaderboards are teh awesome, but it's human nature unfortunately to boost, so I don't know that they're worth it.

So lately we've been talking internally about having leaderboards but only for friends and such. And since they'd just be "friendly", there's no reason to worry about ranked servers. And ipso facto everyone's happy!

So that's the direction we're leaning at the moment."

No and No at least in game. PC users can obviously do the second one.
