You can always say that Ulysses made that stuff up to take you there. You trust strangers?

Also, the Fallout games had backstories, yes, but the stories of the games were never really focused only on your backstory.

In Fallout 1 you had a Vault to save, but many other things mattered, such as the Master.

In Fallout 2 you had a tribe to save, but many other things mattered, such as the Enclave.

Fallout 3 had kinda the same approach that Fallout 4 has, so we'll skip it.

In Fallout NV you had to find answers about who shot you and why, but then we have House, the NCR and the Legion.

In Fallout 4 you apparently have a family that will play a main role in the story, and it seems that your son being generated by the two parents you created matters, so that means he's important.

It looks like they're telling the story for me this time, to be honest. Maybe it's just me, maybe it's the Mass Effect-esque dialogue...

We still know nothing about the plot, including whether or not that script leak is still relevant. Fallout 4 could just as easily be another "start on a quest in search of the McGuffin, get wrapped up in the fate of the wasteland" narrative that every Fallout game has.

I think you are overreacting. Nothing in there sets his attitude toward the world. Yes the backstory is decided for you. He was in the army. He is afraid of nuclear war and being killed by it. He has a family. Do any of these have a severe impact on your ability to Role play? Not at all. Unless you are super super against your character being in the military, But then again you may be able to role play and say he was an intelligence officer or translator or water purifier rather than just some grunt. These details really aren't that restrictive. Every Fallout character has a backstory

"Because if my time in the army taught me one thing it's that..."

Oh c'mon that isn't the intro is it? Is this for real? That's terrible lol. I mean really that is so bad. I hope they changed that.

This is the first time I've seen this btw. Trying to see as little of the game as I possibly can, but really...

Agreed. Not worried about role play restriction at all, it's just a bit weak.

Take the "war never changes" thing. What's this supposed to mean?

That despite almost making ourselves extinct, the human race got right back on to doing what it's always done. Makes sense. Maybe even kind of deep.

In the context of a world on the brink of nuclear armageddon? Hell no, that's just dismissive. "Oh. It's just war, no different from all the other ones"

Oh, my immershunz.

IF you have a problem with this kind of thing, stop playing Video games, because 99% of video games give you a backstory and parts of a personality.

I really hope we get to hear the female PC give that speech if we pick her. Would love to hear that in a female's voice.

We really haven't seen alot of the voicing and personality. This comes back to them giving your characters logical ways to respond to something. If the voice actor has enough variation we should get different personalities from the dialogue so long as beth put such options in the dialogue. As for the voice in and of itself I think beth did a decent job at picking someone who I can see voicing different characters. Really it isn't a matter of the voiced dialogue hindering rp its will the dialogue options in general be good enough for rp to begin with. I'm hoping that them investing so much into the pc will actually make for good dialogue for once. Besides a few exceptions, in previous beth games dialogue was very bland.

For those that don't like the character back-story and already want to rage quit ...

I'm sure there will be a mod for that. Just like with Skyrim - https://youtu.be/Il9qi2et0Z4
