Multiple voice actors for protagonist?

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 8:48 am

I can't remember seeing anything mentioning whether there will be multiple voice actors for the protagonist? has there been any word on this that i have missed? the reason being that it would be kinda strange hearing Brian T. Delaney's voice coming from a black or asian guy...

No. Just one for male and one for female. ~13,000 lines of dialogue each.

One male and one female voice. I would have preferred if they got Ron Perlman doing both voices it would have been awesome. A mod maker should contact Ron Perlman and see about doing that.

It's a good question, and one that has been raised on a few threads.

I believe the answer is no, there is one male and one female voice actor.

On the 'racial voice' point, one could argue that much of the tone of a person's voice which would allow racial identification comes from social/cultural factors, accent and body size rather than ethnicity (race). Many voice actors can and do voice characters of different racial backgrounds (including Courtenay Taylor, for example).

More practically, if you do have voice actors of differing racial backgrounds, at which racial group do you draw the line and would the voice actor have to sound stereotypically of that race to meet the needs of the job? Recording 13,000 lines is not cheap.

To the OP's point, there are plenty of black and asian guys who have accents 'like' Brian T Delaney, just as there are plenty of black, white and asian guys who don't.

yeah, listening to his voice in the demo again, i can see it possibly sounding okay with a black character.

The main reason i asked was because i have been playing fallout 3 and chose a black character, which meant that James (dad) was also black, and he sounded very strange and off putting with liam neeson's voice. At Least in fallout 3 i can imagine my character sounding like Denzel washington ahah.

Been discussed before.

You have to consider the fact that the Protag lived in the suburbs all his/her life.
She/He'll be speaking like an Average American Suburbian person regardless of ethnicity.

We've had this discussion before. Your accent is a product of your environment, not your race.

To be fair this isn't always the case.

Different ethnicities do tend to have subtle differences in vocal quality, regardless of upbringing. Note I'm not talking about accent, but actual tone and texture of the voice itself. This is a well known fact amongst vocalists, but can be seen in regular speech as well.

I grew up with people of north, east, and west african descent, but I'm only half african and I'm always told I sound like a white person over the phone until people see me. It has nothing to do with my upbringing.

Likewise I know a white person who was adopted by a white mother and black father, but grew up mostly around his father's family. He sounds white regardless of his accent.

In Skyrim, it was incredibly strange hearing the redguards all voiced by white people, even though every previous game gave them black voice-actors.

There are exceptions obviously but there is a basic difference in tonal quality of different ethnic groups. It's going to sound very weird hearing my Wesley Snipes character sound like Ryan Reynolds.

It may have been discussed before, however I am new to the forums and didn't fancy searching the entire fallout 4 forums looking for the discussion..

And I understand that accent isn't based on race, but, just because a black man can sound white, doesn't mean I won't him too.
For example denzel washington didn't grow up in the "hood" all his young advlt life, however he still has a distinct voice and tone...

I personally feel the male PC's voice is neutral enough to work with any ethnic range.

Another issue with having too many voice actors for the protagonist in a video game is the increased risk of not being able to rehire one or more of said voice actors for whatever reason (scheduling issues, budget, etc.). They probably could never have more than a small handful of voice actors (maybe about three per gender at most) due to budget anyway.

Add location who is probably more important for accents.

This is not TES where an Bosmer would sound different from an Orc, more fun in that Khajiit talk is an accent, ESO makes fun of it at least once.

At about 5 minutes in, Todd talks about the process for selecting the voice actors. They wanted a voice that would work for everyone.
