Do you like hearing your character's voice?

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 6:39 am

I think the conversation cut scenes are a big improvement over Skyrim. It seems much less like a "game" and more like an immersive story to me. I can see it being a problem for those hardcoe first person "I'm the PC" types but after playing games like Mass Effect, I much prefer the cinematic type dialogue.

Except you didn't. Your "refutation" of the idea that the voiced protagonist limits roleplaying freedom is that having to play with more strict and pre-defined limits is "challenging and rewarding."

I am refuting the idea that a voiced protagonist with a specific background is limiting to roleplaying. Imho.

And meanwhile, character dialogue is more watered down with fewer choices than in any other Fallout game.

I like it for the most part. My wife enjoys watching me play games, and having a voice protagonist makes things more cinematic and entertaining for her. That said, I don't see why they couldn't make it an option to either toggle off the voice and/or have the full line display in the interface prior to making a selection. I'd wager some of the first mods will be focusing on making the dialog system more like FO3/New Vegas

Fair enough, but it is miles ahead of Skyrim.

There already is such a mod.

Say goodbye to races, not only is it consistent with Bethesda's policy of streamlining but there's no way they aren't going to try and attract the demography of gamers that like the cinematic experience of Mass Effect (as they did with fo4).

It can work. It worked in Dragon Age Inquisition for 4 races. You just need to pick good voice actors with alot of depth and width. We'll see when that time comes anyway, its 4 years off at the least.

Agreed. F4 seems to be more about choice in terms of action instead of convo options. I do miss being able to use science or explosives or whatever to get through a conversation or find a different way to do something. That said, I felt like by NV it had gotten meaningless because in a lot of conversations you had like five or six different possible stat-check conversation options, which seems good, but ultimately they all got you to the same result in a conversation or quest. I would only want more conversation options if they're meaningful and can lead to different outcomes.

The choice in 4 comes in stuff like: if you kill a specific raider or gang member, the named "boss" guys, the gangs catch on and it will come up in-game. I haven't gotten far in the main quest becasue I'm too busy wandering around but I want to see if it works that well with factions and such.

"Oh yeah? Well I think that multiple player races actually get in the way of roleplaying freedom, because having everything pre-selected for me takes me out of my comfort zone. Choice is scary so I always play the same thing over and over again unless someone forces me to play something else."

I find I enjoy it very much, despite initially thinking it would not be so good.

I mostly like it. The dialogue system needs to be more informative though (I'm definitely downloading that one mod) and next game needs more voice options (it's just a matter of principle, you know).

The removal of unique dialogue choices is the biggest downer for me.

Dragon age Inquisition had terrible voice acting, and has the same problems with dialogue as this game.

The stat checks in NV, do actually often lead to different results. And the choice is meaningful regardless of outcome, it helps you personally define the sort of character you want to play, as well as makes the player see use in a particular skill. So for example, you would choose option B, instead of option A, because it's right for your character, even though you would think option A would logically make more sense in terms of results.

These are actual mechanics that objectively enhance the roleplaying experience instead of neutering it.

I find it odd since I always play myself and the voice actress sounds nothing like me... I find it startling every time I hear myself talk... so... husky

At first, I was a little 50/50 over the idea of a voiced protagonist in what is apparently a sandbox game. I love to have my character fleshed out more with actual voices, but at the same time, I want to be able to project myself as them with my own conceived personalities.

Then I remembered that we (PC gamers at least, and maybe console gamers in the future) will have access to mods that can disable our character's dialogue. I think they already have one available already, if I'm not mistaken. So, this isn't really an issue to me anymore since I get to have the best of both worlds depending on how I feel RP-wise.

I find the poll results here to be very strange, almost a little suspicious.. Especially that the majority wants this in ES also.

The game has about a low 5-6 in userscore on metacritic and the vast majority of the complaints is about the voiced protagonist and how it hinders any varity in character development.

Also my own poll here about if people roleplay or not the answer is "yes" with 73%.

I can't get this to add up with the results given here. I can understand if people who just play this game as any other shooter adventure, like borderlands would not mind the voiced protagonist, but I can't see how anyone who are into free RPG:s can like it.

But it's not that simple. The reason you have such a shoddy and limited dialogue system is because it's impossible for them to include even nearly the same amount of choice and flavor in dialogue when all of it is voice acted.

I find the male VA surprisingly fitting for my current character. But knowing that all subsequent characters would sound the exact same doesn't really make me want to start a new game in the future. I already know that the voice won't fit my intended second character.

I really hope Bethesda returns to the old ways. No voice, but instead more dialogue options. Not the other way round.
