How interactive are the companions?

So, knowing Bethesda I didn't have big expectations for companions since they were usually nothing but cannon fodder with no personality in Fallout 3 or Skyrim.

However, after I recruited Piper and while doing a quest for the Minutemen (cleaning out some infested settlement), she actually told me to wait and went over to some villager to ask some interview questions. She even reacted to me kicking out Dogmeat for her.

I thought that was rather cool and unexpected and made them more like the New Vegas companions, so I was wondering if you guys encountered more of this? Do they even react to main quest or side quest events or so on?
