A theory on the graphics being so called underwhelming...

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 12:55 am

Don't really care about graphics to be honest, they are infinitely better than the games of old that I used to enjoy.

I do however think the water reflections are incredibly poor. They're all the same texture and in no way reflect the surroundings, looks like windows reflecting off a hillside, or a tree, or a pylon, all the same. It broke the immersion a little when I spotted it.

I can play the game on 4k but not at 60fps so I just go for 1080 on my 65 inch. I think it looks decent. I prefer they focus on the game world instead of graphics myself. Some of the character animations can get a little rough, when they are speaking especially.

I'm a console player (xbox one) and I've taken some pretty sweet pics on my phone of the scenery and how it looks and I've got to say.. Wow this stuff is a big step up IMO. Is there a way to put up pics via phone or will I have to put them on my PC? I'm a man of story.. But I'm also a man of fine art design.. And this game is perfect for both, again IMO! Us console players really don't have it that bad my PC fellows, hell I am one, I personally think it's just young kids who think everything has to look photorealistic.. Which this game at points, does.. There are some hiccups with textures but not too many.. Actually the way I judge a games graphics are like this.. Sky, water, terrain, buildings and small items, then see how well they mash up and they do a pretty darn good job in this one. Skyrim looks sweet on vanilla to this day on my 360 IMO..

the issue I have with the graphics is.. the sky, environment, sun, fog, shadows all look AMAZING. The textures on people and such... look washed out and grey. I can't tell the difference between a dead raider and a dead ghoul unless I mouse-over them. There is no contrast. The whole thing needs a good unsharp-mask. Can't wait for a texture pack that makes the textures as sharp and contrasty and vibrant as the environment is. Oh, and makes ghouls look like ghouls.

Ps4 looks great most of the time, it's just occasionally, when shadows and shading are lacking that the world can look a bit flat/last gen. I've only noticed this 2 or 3 times though, most of the time I find myself just looking at the beautiful scenes with the fog effects and lighting etc.

I fear this is the case as well. They're doing the most technically challenging kind of games on the map, and yet don't seem to have significantly invested either in R&D or new talent since 2008. You can't keep up with the competition that way in such a rapidly evolving business, and Fallout 4 has proved to be a more clear illustration of the resulting stagnation than I had hoped. We don't know what's going on behind the scenes of course, but unless they've put a significant portion of their tech people on developing a new engine while the rest have been working FO4 I don't think we'll see them recover until in the mid-20s, if they ever will. Developing a new engine which would bring them back to the forefront is years and years of work, and a heavy investment in both man-hours and economical resources.

I'm playing away with both Witcher and Fallout 4 on Ultra and they both look pretty bloody good to me. I think I actually prefer some of FO4's character models. Witcher's generic NPCs kind of fall behind the rest of the game except in talking mode IMO. The Witcher is a prettier world but that makes sense given the context of both games. Bottom line, I'm not seeing this enormous contrast in quality. Player animations are better in Witcher certainly. I AM seeing that most stuff in Witcher is Static whereas I can interact with most things in FO4

Very happy with the look of both games.

Eh, I think the game simply suffers from existing within the confines of a crappy engine.

This is unfairly short-sighted, considering that they've been consistently improving on their past games for so many years. Bethesda is still hiring, I think, and with their reputation and funds, there's no shortage of skill available.

The only reason graphics could be considered bad is because they need to make sure that the current gen consoles can actually run it. Skyrim was pushing it on 360/PS3 as is, and now Fallout 4 comes out with a highly interactive and detailed world - it's to be expected.

I have everything set on Ultra and at 2560 res. In some areas, it looks stunning. In others, it looks appalling. There are some particularly bad indoor areas.

However, despite that, I am enjoying the game. And I'm guessing that there will be some graphics mods coming out. I'm also looking forward to immersion mods like hunger, thirst and sleep.

I'm on PC playing on Ultra. I'm quite happy with the graphics. When you're talking to characters, you can see the detail on their faces. It appears slightly more, saturated, than Skyrim did - which I really like as it separates it more from the series (no more Skyrim with guns nickname!)

Yes, we can all agree this is no CRYSIS 2, but I'd much prefer decent graphics and a good storyline, combat, encounters than amazing graphics and an awful combat system and storyline where you get bored and end up flicking over to some dirty website to pass the time. This is proved by figures showing that one major advlt entertainment sites views dropped DRASTICALLY the day FO4 was released.

But I digress, I am more than happy with the graphics. Anyone that moans about graphics in the game obviously isn't playing for the right reasons!

I don't think anyone contest that they've improved them, but you have to look at how far those improvements go compared to what other studios have achieved with their games over the past decade. And it's not the hardware - my modded Skyrim runs on a GTX 660 and looks like a generational leap ahead of FO4, and that's largely thanks to the work of amateurs. The lack of technical brilliance in FO4 is definitely in part due to the decision to develop the game on an engine originally designed to run on a 360, but I think we're also starting to see the effect of that they've only expanded their team with 2-3 people/year on average since the days of Oblivion. It's simply unreasonable to expect them to maintain the technical edge when so little of their earnings go back in to the company, and when we've entered a point where it's not uncommon for other studios to put twice the workforce on developing their products.?

I play most new releases on PS4 and Xbox One and graphics do matter to me. As for Fallout 4 I'm more than satisfied with the graphics. Regarding references to Elder Scrolls I was and am very disappointed with EOL. Skyrim is still one of the best games ever and I was excited for EOL. EOL is fun to play but what they have done visually is make it look like a cartoon which causes it to always look and feel like a video game never ever taking me into the world and feeling like I'm there. Fallout 4 makes me feel the mixed emotions between a lonely lump in my gut as I stand on high ground looking out over peaceful, quiet landscapes only to suddenly experience anxiety and fear and downright panic when spotting an enemy or worse, being surprised by a sudden attack.
