Should there be some way to track the duties of settlers? It's easy to lose track of what everyone's doing, especially when new arrivals turn up, maybe add an extra menu in the pip boy, or (bracket) their duties next to their names etc.

Agreed but if you want some advice on how to keep track of them I can give you a few examples of what I tend to do with them, just put hats on them! farmers can wear fedora's and Guards can wear Combat Helmets, and shopkeepers etc hats of your choice makes it very easy!
I usually buy them from various vendors and whenever I kill an enemy with a hat I always take them to store for my settlers, as for combat helmets you can goto Parsons State Insane Asylum every time you fast travel there mercenaries respawn and most of them have combat helmets, hope it helps!
I'm wishing they had something that told me what they did. I also wish they had names, or even we could name them. Then I could name them after what they do -farmer Joe ect
definitely needs a way of tracking them.
with generic names like 'settler' on every single character its impossible.
i wish the other use hadnt suggested hats tbh. its a great idea for tracking a very small number i agree.
but its stuff like this that always makes me think bethesda will do jack to sort it themselves and rather rely on users to fix their games.
Better to find a solution than for him to keep it to himself.
hmm none of my settlers will wear or use anything I give them, The only exception are my humanoid companion. they do use weapons, but not armor.
Is there a way to level settlers?
I've been doing something similar to Katie, though I'm having them put on outfits. Athletic outfits for farmers; suits for shop keepers; and military fatigues/BOS uniforms for guards.
In the trade menu, hit "T" to have the Settler equip the item.
I think there should be a task manager for settlers. But first they should fix all the bugs with the Settlers and Settlements first. Like the Radiant Quests for Settlements not completing and forcing you to fail when you leave the area.
Or when settlers are so stupid they wont move away from an object in their set path, wont go in doorways sometimes, and sometimes they're stuck outside of boundries and the only thing you're left to do is kill them. They seriously failed with this system.
I usually give them 10-15. In previous Bethesda games, just having ammo in their inventory gave them unlimited. Not sure if that has changed and I haven't observed closely to figure it out.
