Fallout 4 stealthPipboy issue

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 11:46 am

The Pipboy can become pretty difficult to read when your stealth is high enough, through the use of modded gear (+, I'm guessing, stealth perks). It's pretty inconsistent though because sometimes it's merely overly bright with very low contrast, and sometimes it's actually kind of scrambled, like this: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=563212982

/edit Note that there are other issues and inconsistancies:

1. Sometimes the pipboy is totally invisible, but if you exit from stealth and re-enter it, it becomes visible again. If you click randomly, you'll sometimes 'accidentally' be able to change screens, not that you can see any of them.

2. Sometimes when you press tab to go into the pipboy while stealthed, you can't actually click on anything. If you unstealth, then everything works again (Even if you re-stealth).

3. I had an issue while stealthed that my companion, Nick Valentine, also 'disappeared'. But when I picked up an object, he still was able to make his usual comment about it, as if he was still standing next to me.

It's really screwy. Note that I have a few levels in stealth, plus a couple of magazine-perks, plus one piece of chameleon armor and one piece of shadowed armor.

What do you mean by *your stealth is high enough*? I am unaware of any stat for stealth. I think that your chameleon armor is causing the problem. It may be bugged a bit. You can:

1) Try modifying the pip boy colors in setting to something a bit darker.

2) Loose the armor.

3) See if http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1886/? helps.

4) Apply the beta patch (If you haven't yet) or wait for a patch that works for this issue.

Thanks for the reply.

Actually, it's obvious that there is at least one stealth stat (there probably is more that goes into determining detection, such as movement, use of muffled vs. unmuffled weapons, type of armor, etc.). The evidence is in the descriptions of the agility stealth perk, the descriptions in the stealth magazine affects, and the descriptions of the various pieces of armor (shadowed armor and chameleon armor to name 2 general types). The fact that actual numbers are only used in the agility stealth perk description is irrelevant, it is a stat. It's a hidden stat, but a stat nonetheless. After all, there has to be a method that the game uses to determine how likely it is that you will be detected when you are near a potential enemy.

In any case, it may, as you say, be related primarily to the chameleon armor. Fiddling with the pipboy colors doesn't help because the main color (when stealthed) is far too bright, and the secondary color (which you cannot change, at least in the settings), does not contrast sufficiently with the primary color -- it's less of a problem when the intensity of the colors are normal.

Because of all the stuff that is screwed up, I did stop using both the chameleon armor and the other stealth-enhancing armor (Shadowed armor maybe?) that I was using.

BTW, the problem with Nick, turns out was something that is probably unrelated to stealth -- for some unknown reason, Nick stayed behind when I was exploring an I had found, area, and only showed up again after I went back to the beginning of that area (it was all outdoors, and his way to me was never clearly blocked). I was definitely close to the foliage (which, it turns out, nick was hiding behind, uninjured, for some unknown reason).

BTW, I am going to try the mod you sugggested as well. The author does list a few problems with the current version of it though (in that it doesn't fix all of the issues with stealth, like what happens when it's raining).

BTW, from a logical standpoint, there is an issue with how the game handles stealth. Think of it this way -- if light passes through you, you shouldn't be able to see ANYTHING, because light is not interacting with your eyes then. So clearly, that's not how stealth works. Therefore, it has to be some kind of active system (with a projector displaying images in front and behind you), or a camo system. Either way, you should be able to see yourself even if others don't see you.

The same thing happens to my pip boy when I'm in stealth crouch. I don't have any stealth perks. I have a chest and right leg stealth armor that I got off 2 different enemies' dead bodies. I'm see through when I'm crouched and not moving. ( I can see my PC, it looks like I used a stealth boy.) ( I think, I haven't used a stealth boy yet).

ETA. The beta patch doesn't fix the issue. I had the beta patch when it happened. I have sense got out of the beta patch because the bugged the water treatment plant for the troubled waters quest. It still happens without the beta patch installed.

I'm running Win 10 operating system.

My computer specs. Ibuypower fr991-s, win 10 i7-6700k, 16gb ddr4, 1tb 120ssd, gtx970, 4gb, win 10 fr991-s.?

1) Yes, there is no stealth stat, but there is an equation that determines if the player is spotted or hidden and it is based on many factors, none of which are a stealth stat; though I think we are quibbling over syntax at this point.

2) That you appear invisible while crouching is nothing more than an effect rendered based on the fact that the player has armor equipped that has the invisible effect script attached to it. It is completely unrelated to the hidden/spotted calculation, though said armor may also have a modifier that is applied to the calculation.

3) In addition, the Chameleon armor has a built in effects script that affects the pip boy and is unrelated to the general effect seen while crouching and hidden - other than it most likely uses the same game effect. It is clearly a bug in that wearing it causes a permanent flash effect to take place. It renders the pip boy (virtually) unreadable and I'm positive Bethesda or a user mod will eventually fix this - especially after the CK is released.

4) I know the beta doesn't currently fix this issue, but signing up for beta patch testing implies that there are updates to it that can occur any time (I've already had at least one that I'm aware of), so you'll never know if the next iteration will address the OP's problem, if you are not setup to use the beta patch.
