Galaxy S5 doesn't fit Pip-Boy

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 9:45 pm

Firstly, I am not sure which forum this belongs in, so please move if nessesary.

Alright, so I was one of those who got the Pip-Boy edition, by a lucky coincidence my phone was due for an Upgrade the same week. As the instruction manual for the Pip-Boy mentioned the Samsung Galaxy S5 would fit, I naturally decided it was the best choice, since my Galaxy S3 was pretty much on it's last legs and dying on me.

I've just discovered it won't fit at all. I'm not about to try forcing the phone into the casing, the designated area to fit smart phones is simply too small for it.

This is pretty poor design here, Bethesda. You claim it'll fit said smartphone and I discover that is pretty much not the case. At present my only options seem to be to find an old iPhone lying around the house and see if it's still good enough to work, or to try and get a file and start filing away material on the Pip-Boy itself to make the phone fit.

I appreciate this must feel like nitpicking. But I do feel rather misled here, and wondering who in the design department claimed this would fit. I do Design Engineering as my job and it's pretty obvious that the S5 fitting is a load of rubbish, plus there is clearly plenty of space to make that area bigger to allow for larger phones to fit, so I would dearly like to know why me, and presumably a few others have basically been lied too. harsh as this sounds, i feel like i've been sold a product that does not do what is advertised.

Anyone else had this problem, and anyone happen to have any solution for how to make the phone fit?

It fits.

Push down on all corners. Top of your phone left.

Barely, and that caused the little bit of metal used to pivot to lid to fall out when I tried opening and shutting the lid, it doesn't shut properly now as I can't put it back in, getting the phone out required me to use something to pry the phone out.

To confound matters. I can't properly unscrew it because the foam and strap inpedes the use of screwdrivers on the inside, and the foam is basically tearing by the strap as i tried this.

In all fairness, this a really poorly designed item, why are the screws on the inside where the foam makes it hard to get them? Why is the lid connected by a part that basically fell off because it was not secured? I can't repair it without doing more damage in the process? It's essentially just a plastic statue for me now.

I agree. Its a pretty steep price for something not compatible with your phone.

Is there a way of detaching the strap and the foam BEFORE I unscrew everything? Because I'm afraid to touch it again to fix it in case I wind up damaging it more.

There is a reddit thread that mentions other problems but no guide on how to dismantle the thing safely.

Foam is friction-fitted, or at least it is on mine. You should be able to pull it out with ease. The strap seems to be bolted onto the pip-boy itself, but you can thread the velcro part through the plastic... thing that it loops around, the upper foam pad will then slip through it.

Not sure if you can detatch the velcro bit with screws ir something. Let me know- I stuffed it in the top on mine because it started tearing the foam where it pops through.

Well i managed to get the foam off as you stated, wish I had known about that before it tore.

Now I just need to know which screws I need to remove so I can access the inside.

I'll dabble but I'll wait to see what you find out as well, at least I know I'm not impeded anymore.

Keep me informed, I'll check back and update you as well if I find anything. Thanks for the assistance so far.

Mine fits. It's definitely tight, but it does fit and close with no modification on my side.

I did notice that you've gotta push the clasp down manually rather than just trying to jamb the lid closed.

Okay, so running on the basis that the screws by the hinge are on the bottom and the ones by the catch are on the top, I removed the bottom three screws and it has loosened the part on the back where the cover connects too. However that has not removed it, something else is holding it down and I can't see what it is.

I'm counting 12 screws. Three near the hinge, four by the top latch, two off to each side near the top by the armholes, and a final screw in that divot. I'd help out further, but it looks like two of the screws are stripped near the top latch, and so won't be able to remove that panel. Sorry.

I don't think you need to remove all the screws, it's the bottom three but something else is holding it down. I don't believe it is a screw.

Basically, the back part is partly held down by the three screws near the hinge

There might be a miscommunication.

If you're talking about the bottom section where the hinge of the metal clasp is at, well you're SOL. I can see the smooth remains of superglue from a few of the holes.

If it's the top section where the phone is placed, you'll likely need to remove all of the screws. That actual "Pip-boy" section is a second plastic piece with a plastic lid over it, and the whole thing looks like it's been screwed to the top section. I don't see any evidence of supergluing. For durability, that latch probably has a few plastic peices, one or two, that fits inside the pip-boy section. So to remove that, you need to dissasemble the whole top section.

yeah I think you're probably right there from what i can see, I'm going to need to find a flathead screw driver from somewhere then.
