I must give my congrats to Bethesda for actually making colorful companions. I was hoping Bethesda would notice that Serana from Skyrim was a step in the right direction, and they definitely delivered on that aspect. Their personalities, their interactions with the environment and other NPCs, and their dialogue input during conversations and traveling really make them feel alive and more than just pack mules.
The only things I dislike are the dialogue system, the selection of clothing, and the lack of developed settlements. The dialogue wheel would be nice if it were an actual wheel with more than just four responses. When it comes to clothing, I am not too fond of what is offered in terms of aesthetics though it may just be based on my personal tastes. And I realize that the Minutemen are supposed to spark growth and development in the Commonwealth, but it would be nice to have at least three more established cities for characters that don't want to focus on settlement building.
Combat feels better in a "Serious Sam shooter" sort of way, though not in the RPG kind of way.
The soundscape has been improved.
The difficulty seems to have been spiked.
The writing so far ranges from really bad to mediocre.
The new dialog system is simplified, awful and limiting [censored]. "Hate dialogwheels."
The new character system is rigid, feels inconsequential and is just plainly not fun (and I believe when Hines said it was a lot more work to make it up than tweaking the previous one, but this is one of those places where they could've saved the effort and just improved what they had based on what New Vegas did).
The magic items are just ridiculously stupid (like a board doing freezing damage, a tire iron doing more damage at night, flamethrower doing freezing damage, iirc there is a weapon that does more damage when you are in having withdrawal effects, perception boosting arm padding, Speech Bobblehead saying "Let the words be your weapon" and the effect being +100 caps for vendors what the actual [censored]?, etc), it really goes beyond...
The whole random junk collector / wasteland Livingstone schtick has gotten really, really old and seeing as that's 90% of the game... well...
The minute to minute gameplay is boring and the taste of pointlessness, recycling and repetition is floating all over the place.
It might pick up better as the game progresses, but so far... this will likely be the first Fallout game I will never finish.
Love:
Nearly everything (w/minor complaints)...they did a great job.
Hate:
-Voiced protagonist with an objective that makes me feel like a deadbeat dike for wandering (ignoring the search for my son and wifes killer). I prefer to tell my own tale with my own idea of how he should sound yet I'm constantly reminded of my son every time I talk to someone. The only good thing about voiced is the way he yells after taking psycho.
-Not being able to see my equipped weapon holstered on me.
-Bullet sponges. I have a .308 pistol that does 109 damage and at level 16 I should be able to pop unarmored human heads.
These are not deal breaking gripes but the game would be that much better if they were different.
Love everything in the game.
There is a part of the story that bothers me though, because I do not think it makes sense at all; but it's not a big deal. Just to share though... The main reason the United States ran out of resources, is because they were making technological advances at a pace that was not feasible to maintain at the rate they were consuming natural resources. During this time period, the People's Republic of China was new(1949)the first centralized government China had after centuries of in-fighting and a not so long ago Japanese invasion, China was still trying to get on it's feet. During the time the game is set, which I believe is early 1950s, China could not of possibly had the resources to have a military capable of invasion on another continent so far away nor the resources to make lots of nukes.
Would of made more sense if they used Russia and not China in the story. As Soviet Russia rose to power quickly in Europe after the war.
Love
The settlement aspect, the different visuals of power armor and the aspect of it
Hate
the lack of proper tools/models for settlement aspect. The non living AI in settlements that only works and sleeps unless unassigned.
Love: Power Armor.
Hate: The fact that companions INSIST on not staying put when you want to issue commands. 99% of the time, I'm trying to talk or use them as a saddlebag, and I can't do that if they walk away. Additionally, the fact that the dialoge system well... if someone initatied dialogue, you can't be sure it was that and not a random saying, so if you try to talk to someone else... you can't. Very annoying when trying to get stuff from a companion to sell when that happens.
Dude... the chargen starts in 2077, and you play around after the war in 2287 or so. The 50's asthetic kept going or re-emerged by 2077.
I like the more colourful setting of the game, the comments companions make in certain situations. I also like the settlement system though i see huge missed opportunities with it. It would be great for rping if you could start settlements for different factions and not just the minute man. Like making ''settlements'' for raiders basically and earning money through robbery and attacking caravans. It would have been a great thing for being an evil character. Shooting has also been massively improved.
Things I really dislike are the radiant quests like the kidnapping side quests that keep happing every time. Rescuing someone from raiders is fun the first time but not the rest of it. Bethesda really dropped the ball on that.
I also really dislike the limited dialogue and one dimensional characters they put in the game along with the perk system. While the perk system is not a complete disaster I find it boring to level up my character.
I love the game, though I wish I could see my holstered weapon instead of it magically appearing & disappearing.
I miss Karma, too.
Just to add, when i sent dogmeat to abernathy farm with no doghouse,he wouldn't show.,but in a moment of inspiration i built a doghouse and dogmeat almost instantly then showed up at it.
So,just make sure you build/have a doghouse wherever you sent him
My loves?
Settlements and the companions this time around, particularly cait,i'm a svcker for badass irish gals.I also like the graphics/art style. That's how fallout should look imo.although there are some texture problems.
My hates?Settlements, they could have done so much more with it.
I have been playing for week now and my list growing for the things that I hate about Fallout 4.
Im 20 hours in but not that far through the plot so things may change.
Likes:
The crafting system even though I find it funny that after picking up various pipe guns and modifying them leaving me enough unused mods to make a complete gun it won't actually allow me to make one.
The difficulty being higher, the first "boss" fight especially
The settlement system, this is why I have not got far through the plot even though i've played 20 hours.
I killed a group of bandits for a mission and it affected an encounter that was not mission related a little later on. The bandits in the second encounter were talking about a group that had been wiped out by a lone wanderer.
Dislikes:
Not being able to craft ammo, I can make complex items such as energy weapon components from old toasters but can't make bullets?
Lack of a settlement tutorial. I know that you sort of get one after the first couple of plotline missions after you leave the vault but as you walk from the vault towards those missions you come across your first settlement area with workshops. You come across the settlement game system before you have the tutorial about how to use it.
The AI and stealth. I kill a bandit next to his mate and hide round a corner, his mate goes back to whatever they were doing as if nothing happened a few seconds later. If I have "gone loud" then the whole camp should be on alert and stay on alert.
My biggest gripe though is companions not staying when I tell them to stay. The game allows you to play without the companions, there is even a perk for it but whenever I fast travel I end up with Codsworth with me even though I told him to stay in Sanctuary.
Aye you have to choose dismiss by first going through 'talk'.
