Big crafting question, would love 100% confirmation

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 3:57 pm

Does anyone know with any certainty if you waste materials when crafting?

An example is as follows. I have a gold flip lighter.
I craft something that uses oil.
The crafting window says 1 oil (gold flip top lighter)

My question is this. Since the lighter get scrapped into gold spring and oil but only oil is being used, will I lose the gold and spring or who'll they go into my pool of springs and gold?

I have too much junk and am having a hard time figuring it out since everything is spread across a dozen settlements.

I read somewhere that those extra parts go in your Workshop inventory, but I don't remember where. Sorry, that wasn't 100%, but I'm pretty sure that's how it works. Alternatively you can break it down yourself and then it will all go in your inventory.

You do not waste the materials. The leftovers may not immediately appear in your workbench inventory, but if you leave and come back (with fast travel for example), the missing stuff should be there.

Only your weapons and armor waste material, scrapper makes it so you get more when scrapping them.

Thanks, i feel a bit better. I suppose this is as good of confirmation as I can get.

I didnt know if anyone actually took the time to test this.

I have been worried so i just drop and scrap all the junk with multiple important crafting materials.

You could easily confirm this at an unused Workstation (one that has nothing stored in it).

  1. Gather materials that would allow you to craft an item an have some leftovers.
  2. Fast Travel to an empty Workstation
  3. Store the junk in the Workstation
  4. Craft the item from # 1
  5. Fast Travel away
  6. Return and check the Workstation for the leftover junk.

With weapons, if you like attachments but not the weapons, just craft a crappy mod on the weapon and the better mod will go into your inventory.

You still have to find the weapons with those attachements. To create an ultimate version of a weapon that would take considerably longer than just crafting

Question,

If I take the mods out my inventory and store the mods in the work bench can I still use the mods as replacement parts or do i need to have them in my inventory to utilize them on weapons???

I can answer this. Assuming you are in your settlement and you store your mods in the crafting bench pool. They will be available.

doing this though runs the risk of your mods being scrapped for parts.. which would happen automatically if you needed that material.. it is unwise to store you mods at a settlement.

Is that true? You can't break down mods. It appears they are not a part of your scrap pool. they also do not appear with the scrap pool shared between settlements that are connected by convoys. This can be easily answered (unfortunately not by me at the moment as I can't get to my game right now): When you go to craft something, at least in the weapon mod workbench menu, it tells you what scrap it's taking components from so you can see right away if it's going to take apart one of your weapon mods. But I really don't think it does that- they don't appear to be part of your scrap pool.

This has been tested since release with mixed results, which is why so many people continue to scrap on the ground instead of storing everything in the workbench.

The results have been quite consistent.

I tested this a few days ago, your left over materials from items end up in your workbench

My Test

1. Took everything out of workbench

2. Dropped it all in a nearby container

3. Picked up a couple of items to craft something

4. Remaining mats were in my workstation.

I believe I built something like a fence post. One of the items I picked up was the blast zone game it used the wood and I had nuclear material in my workbench. I didn't specifically try crafting a mod for a weapon, but I imagine it would be the same.

From my own testing scrapping on the ground yields the same result as scrapping at the work bench, but maybe it has something to do with me having the Scrapper Lv. 1 perk, not sure. Definitely have never seen any of my weapon mods end up being scrapped for building, though, and I've been storing them in the workbench from the beginning because they have weight.

Yep, quite a few people have been saying they lose all their common components. Others are saying that it's a display error, if you check back in after fast-travel or sleeping the missing mats will show up.

Since there are plenty of items in the game that simply CANT be scrapped at the bench but can be scrapped by dropping them, I just drop everything and scrap it. Takes time, but you don't get screwed, except when Dogmeat sits on the stuff and you can't see it.

It seems to me like most of what you can't scrap at the bench (for me so far we're mainly talking about clothes and armor) don't yield complex or rare materials- just metal, cloth or leather.
