cannot hear dialog

Post » Sat Jun 05, 2010 7:51 pm

Hello everyone, I am having issues with conversations with NPCs. Now I'm 99.99% sure the problem is caused by my pathetic onboard sound card because I had the same issues with another game.

I would/can hear all sorts of sounds perfectly, including when an NPC walks by and says something. Such as in the start of the game where you are born you can hear your mother and father speaking just fine. But come time to actually have a dialog with someone like Amata at the birthday party, I cannot hear her clearly.

It sounds like every single NPC has a towel wrapped around their head while talking to me during a conversation. But as soon as I exit the dialog I can hear everything just fine, like when they walk past me and make a comment.

Like I said, this isn't the first game I am having these issues. In another game, I manually went in on the options -> sound and selected my sound card for output. But this game's sound option does not have an option to choose which sound card to use for sound.

This game has a very rich and ingaging character dialog. It would be a shame if I have to miss out on one of the best any game has ever created. Buying a new sound card is out of the option for me and I have fixed the same issue in another game. I was just hoping, praying, that someone out there has a fix for this.

My onboard sound card is a pathetic realtek that came built into my dell.

Thanks!!

I have the same issue, character speech is to low, one solution I use is to set voices to max and all other sound low, then crank up the speaker volume this helps for me, downside is that some voices then get a little to loud. One other tips is to try to stand close to the one talking, it looks to me that voices disappears to fast with distance in the game.

Just got an email response to my initial inquiry.

The tech support representative stated :

Hello,

Please note that the program is not tested or supported in Windows 7. You *may* be able to run the program using compatibility mode in Windows 7, but we cannot guarantee the program will function properly in this new operating system.

Program compatibility is a mode in Windows that lets you run programs written for earlier versions of Windows. Most programs written for Windows XP also work in this version of Windows, but some older programs might run poorly or not run at all. If an older program doesn't run correctly, start the Program Compatibility Wizard to simulate earlier versions of Windows.

To change compatibility settings for a program:

NOTE: Do not use the Program Compatibility Wizard on older antivirus programs, disk utilities, or other system programs, because it might cause data loss or create a security risk.

NOTE: If the Compatibility options are grayed out, then it is a 64 bit program and cannot be changed.

1. Right-click the icon for the program.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the Compatibility tab.
4. Check the box "Run this program in compatibility mode".
5. Choose the version of Windows the program was made for. For best compatibility, choose the latest Windows version the program was written for. Check the system requirements for the program if you are not sure.
6. It may also be necessary to check the box for "Run this program as an administrator."
7. Click Apply and OK.

I responded back asking if the word "program" means fallout 3.

I'm 99% sure what he is saying is that fallout 3 GOTY was never designed with windows 7 64 bit.

Which is alright with me, the main reason I even brought this up was to make sure fallout new vegas would not have the same issues.

Nothing wrong with Realtek on board sound...I have an Aurora and it works great.
Make sure you have the latest Realtek driver from Dell and configure your speakers to what you have ( 5.1, 2.1 etc) Also make sure your Windows speaker set up matches the Realtek set up.

When someone in front of you is talking and you can barely hear them... but turning one way or another improves the volume..it's just speaker arrangement.

Fallout 3 was not tested for Win 7...New Vegas is.

But I have no real problems with Win 7 64 and FO3...

I did have to replace the atimugpld.dll library with the 64 bit version to correct HDR flickering....and dial it down so it uses only 2 CPU cores.
