Anyone wish we could mark unopened safes, terminals, etc.?

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 10:52 pm

When I see a safe or terminal that I can't open or hack, I have to jot down its location on a notebook so I will remember later to return to it when my skill meets the requirement. Does anyone wish we could do that in-game? Is there a mod that lets us mark the locations of unopened safes and unhacked terminals? Any such mod for FO3 and NV, for that matter? Vault 111 has a master-locked container with what seems to be an advanced weapon. After 100+ hours of play I'll probably forget about it if I don't write it down.

I like your old school approach. It's actually what I do.

Back in the day, game manuals came with a "Notes" section in the back that you could write in. Nowadays, games hardly come with what is called a "Manual", more like a pamphlet that is called a manual, but only has the most basic of directions to get your started, and usually a mini-flier for some other game.

What's wrong with keeping a notebook irl? Much easier to access than anything in game. If it's immersion breaking for you, just hold it up in front of the screen like you're actually reading it in the game! Though that might be a bit of a disappointment when you stop reading and you notice you have a resolution drop.

Yes, I was actually thinking of making a notepad app for the pip boy just for this but until I get looking through the game files properly it wont be realistic, until then I just have an excel spread sheet with the field Location, What and Difficulty.

THe secondary use for the notepad would be Things To Do for example you left a container with some loot in but had to go back, then got distracted by a settlement attack then it's time for bed. Make a quick note, review it the next day and boom, got your stuff.

This would be very handy. I don't remember to make a note of them and I know I'm going to forget a lot of their locations while still under skilled.

Dont locations say (Cleared) when you've opened/unlocked everything? Otherwise if there is still things to find there I think it doesn't say this. I could be mistaken though

This would be a great idea, however it was implemented. I just always try to keep a mental note, which never works. I decided to go with lockpicking, which has been the better choice so far, but there have been a few terminals that I desperately wanted to hack.

And also doesn't help with that the OP is saying; what about locations outside of buildings, what about tracking the difficulty of the lock, what about tracking the type of lock/terminal?

OP, I also make little notes giving location, lock type (terminal/lock), level of lock, and the floor/room it can be found on. I wish I could do that ingame!

If you don't make a ToDo app soon, someone else probably will. It is a good idea and would be quite useful in this game. There is just so much to see an do and people like some of the posters here are doing it old school now.

That's fine, as long as it gets done :) Would you guys prefer it on the pipboy app for phones or on the console/pc game? Both? Which one first if so.

EDIT: Screw it i'll just make a thread for a vote.

I grew up playing games you needed grid paper to make your map for so taking note of locations is nothing. I use an iPad rather than a physical notebook to do this kind of thing now but I don't think I would want anything in the game to handle this- there's enough stuff to fiddle around with in this game already! I'll keep my notepad.

hahaha, Funny post Darksunthefirst.

Here is my advise to you OP. Spec for locking picking, by level 18 you can unlock master lock and be able to get every lock in the game. Take Nick V (Synth in Diamond City) as your follower. Nick knows how to unlock terminals up to advanced I believe. I make him open up everyone that is beyond my novice skill, and I handle the locks myself.

Enjoy!

Once Upon A Time, many games had a map editor that allowed a player to place notations directly onto the map. As PCs and consoles became more and more powerful, I could never understand why that feature totally disappeared. Thinking on that, I just now realized what the primary reason is: Game maps have become far too busy. By that, I mean that developers have crammed soooooo many pertinent locations onto the map that there is little room left for the player to squeeze in his notations without overwriting icons and labels that are already there, hiding under the fog of war graphic.

Still, a player's Journal section would be eminently doable, and now I'm wondering why we are not given that option. In particular, if they built in a map coordinate system that showed where the character's location icon is currently at. (Just list the X and Y coordinates. To preserve fog of war, add 8 surrounding dead zones and do the Xs and Ys across the entire 9 panels.)

I wouldn't say that's great advice since you're basically saying "if you want to pick all locks etc. then play a certain way"... Of course he can spec lockpicking but that's not really the point...

I would like it in-game. Can a mod add these things as "quests", and let you type your own descriptions for such quests? That way, the quest list would show things like "Unopened container at Vault 111", "Left items in Lexington Apartments", etc. Selecting a quest would show a marker on the map (and on the compass, ideally) indicating the location you had selected. Is there any way to "complete" such quests whenever you choose?

If the game would just let us put more than one map marker and let us type a description for the marker, my problem would be solved. But it doesn't, so I hope a mod would do this.

I would love that feature. I should have written things down, because I hate not being able to open a safe, even though half the time it's just random stuff.

Yes. An ability to write free notes would be great. Or just have the ability to add a note a map marker like in an Oblivion mod (Map Marker Overhaul, i think?).

Yes! Map markers would be great. Also, a cleaner map of the inside of buildings.

I never use that local map view because it's just so horrible. I thought Skyrim's was bad but this makes Skyrim's beautiful.
