It wouldn't be much efford to implement a "unkillable expect by player" flag...
Juuuust lazy.

Right? I can't imagine it being difficult for anyone versed in programming. Beth employees should be able to do it in their sleep.
The game saves so often for you, and on so many files, that you never really have to worry about destroying your game. Companions should be more difficult to aggro than other NPCs(friendly fire) but it should still be possible. Besides if you aggro an unkillable quest NPC you have to reload your game anyway.
Best part? You could easily just give the option in the options menu. It doesn't have to be a mandatory feature for every player. Those who want to keep the current system should be able to do so.
Frankly i don't care that some players find that they can't do something that the developers didn't want them to do. Player want is not the be all or end all, frankly most gamers are self entitled and pout when they don't get their way like two year olds. If I want to be an umpa lumpa Sith master using the force to cause the commonwealth to bend the knee me, it isn't reasonable for me to use "Player choice" or freedom as my mantra against the 'evil' developers. It is MY responsibility and YOUR responsibility to play WITHIN the confines of the 'rules' set up by the developers if you can't do that then don't play. stop whining about how you can't kill a TINY fraction of the NPCs in the game.
Why do you care how other people play their game? Especially when giving them the option they want is incredibly easy? Why would you try to shout down criticisms? You're like that guy who says, "Why bother making things better? They're fine just how they are!!"
Nobody has to lose. Everyone can win. So why try to prevent the experience from improving for a certain group of people, for no reason at all?
Too many essential npcs or protected npcs by one way or another in this one. I received a notification that one of my very small settlements, which only had 1 settler, was under attack. I flew there by Vertibird and when I was landing, I saw something like 5 Super Mutants (At Lv50) attacking the Settler, they had very strong weapons, but despite being 5 vs 1 little settler with a pipe pistol and no armor, they couldn't kill him, then they started to attack me and drop my health fast. I heard that Settlers can be killed, but I just haven't seen it, maybe enemies do a 95% reduced damage to Settlers or something because when I wanted to find out if Settlers were essential, they died pretty fast.
Now, Dogmeat rushed to attack a horde of Ghouls, so all of them were drawn to him. All I had to do was throw a grenade to kill them all, because companions are essential and you can use them as bait. I'd be glad to have the option to turn off the essential mode of npcs, maybe with the exception of those needed for he main story.
