Settlement Defense

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 8:49 pm

Hello, I'm on my first playthrough on hard and i got the misc quest defend oberland station. So i fast travel there hand it to some ghouls attacking and replace their rusty fence with a wire fence. The quest is saying to repair using the workshop but I already repaired everything and set up defensing and such. Then once I walk away I get the small message saying I failed the quest. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here? I feel like I'm missing one of the smallest things haha

you have to build up your "deference", not just make it a harder place to attack, walls wont add anything to you defense only guard post, turrents and a few others things ill leave out not to spoil for you

I read on here this was bugged. After returning to defend the settlement, the user said he then slept for a while (didn't say how long) and upon leaving the settlement he didn't receive the failed notice. I haven't tried it myself as haven't had the 'defend settlement' message yet.

Noting another reply to this post - If you didn't have the resources to upgrade a settlements defences there and then (to pass the mini quest) you'd never be able to successfully complete It.

I've just started ignoring these "failed to defend" quests, as the whole thing is so badly implemented and bugged. It doesn't tell you if there's an attack (it hides it under the Misc quests section), settlements get randomly destroyed regardless of defense level, baddies spawn IN the base.

I mean, what's the point?

I've started adding turrets and ignoring walls, because they do SQUAT. I'll worry more about it when and if Bethesda decides to add a little polish to this part of the game.

Defend settlement mission attacks - as in ones you are alerted by popup message, or if missed the message, happen to see mission now displayed as 'Defend XXX settlement' under Misc quest section - end in only three ways, one happy, one legit failure, and one stupidly bugged.

1. Arrive and kill all attackers, get mission success message, and confirm defend mission no longer listed in Misc quests

2. Arriive and fail to kill all attackers, or ignore mission and don't go at all - receive mission failed message, settlement suffers anywhere from minor to severe damage, with usual consequence being far more than if player had gone to help but stood around doing nothing. E.g. Defenses are far more effective when attack is played out vs auto resolved off screen if player does not go. Usual consequence is some settlers dead, some items damaged - up to most severe, all items damaged to zero rating, most or all settlers dead.

3. Arrive and kill attackers, do not get mission success message, quest still listed in misc as defend. Searching, sleeping, waiting - nothing ends the defend mission and no attackers are left. This is not an attacker missed somewhere hiding - zero attackers left for sure scenadio or they have somehow dropped below the world you cant see. Either way, mission is bugged, never resolves until you give up and leave settlement. It then fails, usually with no message saying failed, but within a day - all items are destroyed to zero state at settlement. Settlers are fine, but all items destroyed. This is the bugged scenario.

For me I get this about 1 in 10 to 12 attacks. Not common, not super rare. Veey annoying bug though.

Happened to me again, set up machinegun turrets on every corner of greentop settlement, multiple guard towers and a few guard posts. Wiped out all attacking ghouls and set up a few more defences, definitely annoying but not too bad lost a few people but the named characters stayed. Hope it doesn't happen again its at a 50/50 ratio for bugging :x

Did you talk to one of the settlers after the fight? That was the only way I could get it to end. They said something like "Thanks for helping us out" then that was it.

First settlement that was attacked was Oberland station. FT and took out 3 Raiders. Both settlers alive and well, and was greeted with the "Failed" message.

The second was a settlement I had just completed. When I got the message, I turned and went back. Nothing. No raid. The two settlers were pointing their weapons south, but nothing came. They holstered their weapons and went back to tending crops. Message "Failed" showed up again.

Pretty much done with "defending" settlements. I've seen videos where having nice, compact walls did nothing to prevent Raiders from showing up inside the compound. Ridiculous. What's the point in building a defensive wall when they can spawn within them? Stupid.

Now, I just don't care about any of them except for Sanctuary, which is my home. So far, that hasn't been attacked, but I won't feel sorry for anything that shows up. 110+ defense and more turrets, laser cannons, and shot gun firepower that will pretty much stop anything.

Tomorrow, I plan on ranking this up to 160.

Settlement Defense is freaking bugged and stupid. As mentioned multiple times.

I would just like to fyi that missle turrets (while in auto-resolve is crap) is extremely OPed if you are around to defend the Settlement.

They fire as fast as lasers but instead use missiles that smash everything in seconds.

If I ever attack a Settlement with enemy Missiles Turrets, I am not sure if I will survive.

What I usually do is put 2 at each side (roughly where enemy potentially spawn) on the second or third floor and watch the fireworks light up.

My Sanctuary Hill's (which I use the no limit mod) has like 20 of them. When I do the misc defense quest. I fast travel there, my screen rocks in mass explosions and see completed within seconds (too fast for any bugs :P ).

^^ Missile turrets are hilarious.

Here's a trick for the resource-poor: Modular Gun Trees.

Goes like this - stack 3 Foundation blocks on top of each other. Attach Medium Ladders all round, 2 to a side. Makes kind of an umbrella shape. Now attach single Floor tiles to the bottoms of each ladder. Each floor tile will hold a Turret, giving you a tower with 8 Turrets hanging off it.

Now for the kicker: During raids, go into workshop mode, pick up the whole tower, carry it to the action and place it down. Cement blocks give you total cover while the turrets deliver massive supporting fire.

If that's not your style, the Gun Tree is still a fine defensive structure - one on each corner of your base and you're pretty much covered.
