How long is Fallout 4?

Post » Mon Nov 30, 2015 2:04 am

I played four hours yesterday, was planning on doing my first BoS retrieval mission or whatever. Ended up doing a settlement quest first "real quick", which let me to a town full of Gunners, which led me to a quarry full of raiders, which led me to a factory full of super mutants, finally finished the settlement quest. Immediately another one showed up at the same settlement. That one led me to an excavation site full of raiders, after which I explored the site and it led me like a mile underground through hordes of ghouls to find a ceremonial knife thing. Then I got off for the evening and decided to have a life haha.

No, the quests are not the point of a BGS game. That is where people are missing the point and thinking more could have been done. The point of a BGS game is the world, specifically exploring the world that has been created for you. The quests that are offered by BGS are nothing more than handholding mechanics to get players who need explicit instructions to get out and explore the world. Exploring the world is the entire point of any BGS game so people who simply complete quests until there are no more quests (or simply complete the main quests, companion quests, or faction quests) are not actually playing the game, or at least not aiming at the actual goal of the game. Instead, such players are aiming at a mechanic that is included as a crutch to help players who need it work to work towards the goal.

Completing a BGS game means exploring every single aspect of the world with all possible combinations of player character traits, abilities, choices, etc. It is impossible for anyone to do that in FO4 in 20 hours, and I seriously doubt that anyone can do it in 20 days (which is approximately 400 hours if you take out 4 hours per day for sleep, eat, drink, bodily functions and cleanliness, etc.). The lead producer of FO4 stated he has played over 400 hours and still finds new stuff in the world. That's the entire point. not any quests.

Precisely! I hope people don't mistake me for someone saying the game doesn't have content, as it certainly does. But the 400 hours? Quests are a small fraction.

Did you play Skyrim or Fallout 3? Playthroughs can easily last hundreds of hours. The main quest is a small part of the game. You don't necessarily need to join every faction or do every questline with one character. You don't even need to do the main quest. I usually play until whenever I feel like making a new character (to try joining a different faction, or different mods, combat style, etc.)

In the case of Fallout 4, the highest difficulty mode feels tougher, also settlement and crafting side of things is fun to the extent that after 65 hours played, I'm only level 14 and hardly touched any quests at all.

They really nailed the crafting system. There is a deep feeling of playing a character living in a post apocalyptic setting. I imagine anyone in that scenario would be fighting other groups of survivors, trying to scavenge ruins to find useful stuff for building a shelter or weapons. Never imagined I'd be so excited to find a broken toaster!

U can finish the witcher 3 around 30 - 40 hours if u just do main quest.

Fallout 4 best point is how many place u can find with interesting things that arent mark on the minimap.

Took about 80 horus on my second playthrough to run out of quests. On hardest with a fair bit of collecting and base building. And making a nice line of power armors at one base, think I got 11 or 12 sets so far. I made the comparison in another thread to vanilla skyrim, it feels to me like there is about 1/4th of the quests here.

Now I think they kind of worded it wrong and people got the wrong idea. Beth's quote was that one of the devs has out in 4-500 hrs and is still finding things to do now this can be misinterpreted. More than likely it's little things that can be missed, but I have put in about 80 hrs so far. I've beaten the main quest and unlocked nearly every area in the game. HOWEVER, I have not explored some of these areas thoroughly. I have not done much of the settlement system. I have not found all companions, bobble heads, magazines, unique weapons/armor. And then there's the concept of multiple playthroughs. I missed out on a lot because I rushed through the main story. So now I'm goin to create another character to get the quests I missed out on.

Maybe not 500 hours on one character, but over multiple plays it's more than possible.

I highly doubt The Witcher 3 has more content than a Bethesda game (Witcher 3 is still an amazing game though, from what I've gathered) but honestly... From being a die-hard Bethesda fan, it's hard to beat them in content.

simply finding locations isn't really "doing everything", you just run around as fast as you can finding locations but not exploring them all? ...there is no way you cleared out every dungeon, done every quest, found every bobblehead in 70 hrs, unless you're speed racer and don't take time to pick locks, loots stuff, read dialogue, every location you rush thru? you have to play like rambo and not do everything to say its all done after 70 hrs, just reading dialogue, modding weapons, exploring takes 70 hrs and thats without doing hardly any quests.

I reached MQ ending in 20 (+/- 1) hours, did three side quests before I decided to focus entirely on MQ.

Yes, on Easy difficulty you can zip through everything, but so far on Survival setting, I'm dying and reloading many times in each location I visit, running away from quite a few enemies or trying to find a way to flank or sneak up on them, etc.

Also makes a difference how often you use fast travel, whether you are trying to build out and maintain multiple settlements - there are different ways to approach this game.

I think i should have been more clear.

I understand what you are saying about the objective of BGS games. What I would have liked is if there was more in depth story quests. You know, quests that would dive deeper into what the Institute, BOS or RR was like or how they came to be and essentially what happened in the 200+ years you were frozen. But you dont necessarily get that here. All you get is a very brief overview of just bombs falling and then "here we are". I want to know more about what happened in that 200 years and how people managed to survive all that time after the war and how they were able to rebuild.

But you dont get quests that explain it, at least not as in depth as they could be. You mainly get quests where people only explain a little bit just to fulfill their dialog to get you to help them and that is it.

Its just the immersion of the story is slightly lacking. Its a good story, dont get me wrong, but i really do think that they could have gone a little more in depth with each factions quest lines and the stories that went with them.

I was dissappointed at first cause I thought the map looked small and the amount of quests seemed limited but so far the game is bigger and longer than Fallout 3. I'm only 20 hours in but I haven't even passed that Corvega factory yet. The map is more jam packed and detailed than before. As for the longevity of it compared to past games I will have to see but it seems to have huge potential at this point.

I'm at 130 hours and still roaming the Northern Wasteland. Made some new Settlements at Finch Farm and County Crossing yesterday, but I'll need to source more wood then link Nordhagen Beach to the network and construct a full outpost there as well.

I really like the beach in Fallout 4 btw. And the original soundtrack is brilliant.

Did the USS Constitution quest too. Sided with the robots, of course (like there's any other choice), and I now have the Captain's Quarters with the damn glitch that lists 99% of everything on the ship as owned. I would so use my luxury cabin and move in there if I could.

Also, the First Mate is awesome.

After my initial comment, i have already beaten the Institute and BOS storylines and almost dont the RR storyline to complete all 3 story lines. This has taken me almost 30 hours to complete.

The only reason im not that pleased is because I am a story player. I like playing the stories of games and dont necessarily like playing the side quests unless they have some insight into the backstory or have something to do with the story. So i guess that is why i am disappointed with this game. I know you can go roam the wasteland and do missions but I have already exhausted the Minutemen missions and they have become unbearably repetitive. And i know that all the other missions will become the same way.

I know the point is to not rush the game and believe me when I say that I try not to, its just that when I play any game, I always play it fast. Im just a natural when it comes to playing games. Hell, I beat the Institute story in 27 hours and with other games i would beat them in literally half the time it would take most people to or half the time the devs say it would take. I just know what I am doing when it comes to playing games and that is why i always finish these games fast. Its not on purpose, its just the speed at which I play comfortably. And the fact that it didnt take me long to almost complete all 3 stories is kind of a let down for me. I know a lot of people enjoy roaming and all that, but i cant stand doing that. If I have no mission or purpose in the game other than roaming, then my interest drops to zero because it doesnt give me a reason to play.

This would have been different if they allowed co-op in the game for the end of game play-ability so i could build bases and settlements with my friends, but unfortunately most people on here said "screw you that isnt how BGS works and we dont want it". Well congrats, a lot of people just finished the game and are now bored because there is no challenge nor is there anything to do except repetitive missions that bore you. And the DLC most likely wont be anything to look forward to because it will most likely only add a few missions which will add maybe an hour of gameplay. That just doesnt seem worth it to me.

Im not saying that this game isnt good and i dont want fallout fan boys bashing because of my opinion because it really is a good game. This is a good game, but really does fall short in a few areas. And im not going to gimp the way i play just to challenge myself when the game should provide the challenge because that is not the players job, that is the devs job.

they make their games so you either play the main quest and be done with the game or play it hundreds of hours on one playthrough, i haven't even done 10% of the main quest, maybe 25 or 30 quests total and i've played it ever day since the day it came out, i've probably played it 150 hrs so far, but its because i like doing other stuff in the game, the main quest is not my main interest in the game. their games are made so you can totally ignore every quest and still have a world to just cruise around so its just up to personal playstyle but i don't think there are any games with more overall quality content then a bethesda game, lots of games have main quests that can be done in 5 or 6 hrs let alone 30 or 40
