My confusion about settlements

Post » Mon Nov 30, 2015 10:29 am

Hello,

I have a small question. We start the game from Sanctuary then we pass Red Rocket then go to Concord to rescue small group then we come to Sanctuary again to build up. Do i have to build on Sanctuary or can i directly go to Red Rocket and build a base there since all npc work and wander in Sanctuary in that yellow house. Will they come to me if i build in other place? Do i have to build a settlement around that yellow house? I like the game so far but there are two problem with the game which is a bit annoying, there are some game breaking bugs for example npc can stuck on obstacles etc and there is no tutorial about most important things. You have to watch videos or ask to other people to get info.

You can build at Red Rocket, but the Settlers from Sanctuary won't come to you unless you send them manually. You can set up a recruitment beacon at Red Rocket to bring settlers in as well.

Thank you thats what i want to know, they say enemies attack you sometimes, is there a time for that or is it totaly random?

Also i found another bug. That grand mom in the sanctuary can't remember her name, if you put her chair, she sat there and don't get up anymore so you can't move her chair. This is a problem when you want to change your settlement.

Btw. do gates close automaticly when enemies are near? Because npcs open them when they wander. I can't lock Gates.

Raider attacks are random, but are more likely to occur when your defenses are low. They're supposed to give you warning when it happens, but it seems buggy. It might have to deal with how far you are from the settlement, but I'm not sure. I've only had a couple raider attacks and they were quickly repelled by my laser turrets.

But it's not just Raiders. I popped into another of my major settlements once to put some more beds in and there was radscorpions attacking, including a legendary one.

As for gates-- no. Gates are just decorations really and aren't made for defensive measures. I only put them in so I have a way to reach a fenced in area.

You can get Mama Murphy to stand up by ringing the bell.

The only defenses that work are turrets. Walls are just there to funnel attackers if they spawn outside said walls. This is less likely to happen the greedier you are about spacing. I've walled off only a small area between the yellow house, the nearest standing house behind it, and the hedges next to the yellow house. I can easily fit everything I need within this space - 20 homes, stores, farms, "big brother is watching" turrets, guard posts at the entrances, etc. Sanctuary itself is just too big a place to completely wall off to begin with and raiders will inevitably spawn somewhere within that zone. I hate having so much wasted space regardless. Meanwhile, Red Rocket by default offers the right amount of space but doesn't offer enough of a building limit... but there are mods for that.

Trying to fence off areas is problematic as foes will bypass those measures.

I'm tending to go for largely unfenced settlements (the Tato's can look after themselves)

with turrets / assigned barricades around a walled/roofed central core

(think roman villa, with a courtyard , but with good turret sight-lines around the outside.

The sleeping is basically barracks-style using the small beds (no.3) - they are fine with it.

OMG, more than 40 hours passed and i am still trying to build a settlement on Sanctuary. I built one but didn't like it so removed all and now building again. Can't start the game :D

The problem is npcs often stuck behind doors or other obstacles which annoys me and they don't listen my orders. I assign a npc to guard post but he doesn't stay there.

90hrs and 40-50% was probably spent on building, well learning how and building ;)

Settlers can be assigned more then 1 defense job, think it's 6 (or that's for crops or both) but it's more then 1. That's actually in the official info :)

in sanctuary all I have done is create bunk houses. In the back near the big tree you have two foundation you can use. I put up walls and maybe a second floor then fill them with beds. this way you can have a central location for all your settlers. The biggest problem for settlements is area to plant crops. Some areas are easy, but others are very limited in space.

One thing I would love added is a raised garden. It can be put anywhere and you could have 2 different version. One made of concrete and dirt, other wood and dirt. also having different sizes which use more resources would be nice. Depending on the size will depend on what can be planted in it.

Yup, planting in amongst the weeds is annoying. I'm mostly using nut fruit now so it doesn't look as silly, but being able to create beds would be nice. We also need a bigger water pump for the 80% of settlements that have no access to water to put the purifiers in. Though you can put a purifier in the puddle at the drive in.

I build 2 story bunk houses with the bunks up above and a lounge downstairs, and then put sleeping bags generators and the beacon on the roof. I mostly stick turrets on veranda corners on or the big concrete floor tile so they can shoot over the heads of the farmers and the intervening crap.
