Fallout 4 - a veteran's perspective.

Hey there folks,

Just wanted to chime in with my opinion here, after playing for 169 hours (according to Steam) since release.

I am a veteran of both all the Fallout games, and the U.S. Military, to clarify my subject line.

I loved Fallout and Fallout 2 when they came out in the late 90s. They were pretty much the best games I'd ever seen at that point. I played them over and over, I still actually go back and play around in them to this day when I wax nostalgic.

I've seen a lot of opinions that claim Fallout 4 is not a "Fallout" game. I have no idea why. I am so very immersed in this game world it's amazing. So they changed how we customize our character a bit. It's really not THAT much different from the old style, the perks are much more focused, and I think the system works really well. I've finished the game twice now, with two different endings, and I know there are others that I can choose as I keep going back and making different choices. The endings that my choices led me to were *very* different. Not just minor differences, but completely different outcomes and results.

I am very impressed with FO4, however, there are a few things that I think might need to be tweaked in patches going forward. (you guys had to know this was coming!) The most glaring thing I can see that could be improved is how loot drops are addressed. At level 75, I am overcoming foes that are "Legendary", and very difficult battles. However, I'm receiving rewards that would be appropriate for a 1-5 level character, not a level 75. It seems that the legendary drops do not scale at all. Once in a while I get something that I can modify to work for me, but most of the time, the items are just so weak that no modifications would possibly get them to the point where they would be useful to me.

I know this is nit-picky, but it would be nice to see items that I can say "Wow!" when I inspect the legendary critter I just battled and overcame.

Other than that, the little bugs and annoyances I have seen are really minor, and I'm sure will be addressed going forward. Over all I am enjoying the game an awful lot, gamesas hit a home run with this in my opinion.

P.S. I absolutely LOVE Piper. She is my favorite companion, hands down. "Hmmm.... ...... What's that for?"

Cheers, y'all.

Eric

How about ammo? Are you saving more ammo since the difficulty is easier at such a high level? I'm asking because I am level 25.

I've also been a Fallout fan since fallout for the PC. One thing that seems to be the normal for these games is.. You start out in a vault.. then everyone but you dies(well in FO3's case, you had to find your father.), then you go search for someone/something. I love the concept of Fallout and I honestly wish they would turn into a huge MMO, with guild settlements.. Tons of followers, tons of quests to do... Huge world to explore with rares and legendaries you have to group with people to kill. armor crafting you can sell to other players.. People could set up farms and sell foods, stuff like that.... You can level up. Similar to what World of warcraft did only better, because it would be fallout.

I can dream!

Thank you for your review, nice read.

Hi, FantasyJunkie, actually, because of some of the perks I have chosen in my current playthrough, I have absolutely NO problems with ammo at this time. It's all about the perks.. I'm actually rolling in ammo for all the weapons I prefer, there's no real chance of me running out at all. :) The perk system is very diverse and powerful, and I am enjoying that part of the game a lot.

In the early part of the game, Ammo was very difficult to come by, but that has always been the case in the Fallout games. In the beginning, you are in a constant struggle to just survive, which has always made it so much fun.

Hi there Xithbaby,

I actually really hope they don't try turning Fallout into a MMO. MMO games are a completely different universe than what we have in the Fallout games. They tried doing that with Elder Scrolls, and for me, that was a huge disappointment. I've loved the Elder Scrolls series from beginning til Skyrim. They have done a great job with them as single player games, but multiplayer games inherently cannot have the same powerful story that a single player game can have. Or even a game with the option to have a friend play co-op with you, but if you bring random people into the mix, everything goes to hell. (pardon my french)

I sincerely hope that the most they ever do is make it so ONE friend can join you in your adventures. Anything more than that will result in disaster.

Again, my opinion, and everyone has a different one. :)

Cheers!

There should be a "like" feature on the forums, like Facebook. :) Thanks for your response, Dranlord!
