For Gods sake! Why are there no Subtitle for radios?!

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 1:19 am

I'm a Deaf gamer and I've talked with my other Deaf gamers, we're all frustrated with how half assed the creator of the game were when it came to incorporating subtitles into Fallout 4.

Why on earth did they have to stop at the Radio?
My hearing gaming friends all revealed how many informations they have obtained from the radios be it tidbits, music, distress signals, new missions, new updates, etc.

It is quite clear that Bethesda made Radio important this time round on Fallout 4 but I cannot for the life of me understand why they had to exclude subtitles for this game. It's bad enough that most Hollywood companies don't caption/subtitle songs being sung during a movie.

Hopefully there will be an update that will add those missing subtitles to the game.

I'm hearing impaired myself, so I feel your frustration. I just rely on the NPCs like Garvey or on-screen cues like "Distress signal found!" and go from there.

Sorry, bud. :[

Your basically missing out no the not-very-interesting DJ for diamond city radio. Classic radio has no DJ, and it's music has no lyrics so there is nothing to subtitle.

I'd agree about most of the distress signals which are 10 second sound files on an endless loop. However when you listen to a signal with a quest associated, you will get the quest straight away so whatever info you missed out on will be in your quest log.

There are still a few signals i pick up that i don't know their purpose, they seem to garbled to make any sense of and don't seem like they are related to a quest, instead just giving you some (10 seconds worth) backstory for a local area.

I'm hearing impaired too, and this annoyed me a bit too. But what annoyed me more is that the intro video isn't subtitled (or the ending video for that matter).

I'm not hearing impaired, but I always play with all subtitles on (even general ones) because it's easy for me to miss what people are saying due to not their not enunciating their words clearly or talking too fast or with various accents. I've noticed that whenever I play a holotape that someone leaves out on their desk, chances are that those aren't subtitled either so I end up having to listen to it multiple times to understand it.

If I was hearing impaired and couldn't hear it at all, I'd be missing out on a great deal of lore by not being able to hear those holotapes. They desperately need subtitles as well.

Tip: Subs for holotapes only show if you're outside the PipBoy menu and there's no other dialogue. Try playing them in the inventory then immediately leaving the PipBoy interface.

I'm in the same camp here - not medically hearing impaired, but I do have trouble making out a lot of voices. Would be nice to get a properly comprehensive subtitle/closed-caption update.

That said, I THINK it's due to the way the different audio files are set up. The radio is probably 'background noise' by the game engine's standards, like other sound effects, so it might not be set up to trigger the subtitle cues. There's no full closed cap option, so they wouldn't be recognized as actual dialogue in that case. It may be moddable, or fixable in an update, but that would probably require a whole new addition to the language files to implement CC properly.

Now, the intro video... I'm at a loss as to why they didn't sub that. Now that needs fixing very badly.

You're probably right, but It's more the principle of it. I would rather be given the chance to judge the relevance of the radio sounds via subtitles. It might be classified as a background noise but it still has a direct cause and effect at times, not to mention an immersion opportunity into the story itself. By having no subtitle, it just breaks the moment.

While the probable reason of the Radio being a background noise might be a valid one thus their choice of approach in handling the sound files, it's still a bad excuse, especially when things happens at certain points. And then there are those intro video that had no subtitle...

Hopefully there are some Bethesda staffs watching this forum.
