What Fallout 4 Needs

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 10:33 am

I'm gonna start this off by saying I've put a little bit over one hundred hours into Fallout 4 already and I simply love the game. In fact I enjoyed it and like it a whole lot more than any of the other Fallout games, including 1 and 2 ( however I have not played BoS or Tactics ). But anyway that's just my personal opinion on the game and even though I find it so great it's still not perfect and it certainly has it's fair share of flaws. So I'm going to go over some of the things that I thought needed more work, I doubt there will be any spoilers unless you haven't played the game at all but I'm gonna throw a minor spoiler warning up anyway.

1. Building:

One of the most frustrating things I've run into during my time in Fallout 4 is the building. It's definitely a cool concept but I feel it was just implemented poorly. I've had so much trouble trying to get it to do what I want. It becomes a compromise, one that entails giving up most of what you want just because that stupid freaking doorway won't fit! I mean I know it can fit, I can freaking see it! So why are you telling me it won't work!? JUST WORK! PLEASE!...Sorry about that, I've had bad experiences with doorways. So I'm gonna go down in a list of every issue I have with the building in this game that'll save a lot more time than writing a paragraph on each one.

-Lining objects up takes forever

-Mobility while building is limited

-Rotation is ridiculously sensitive :nuke:

-You can die while building but can't save :nuke:

- Can't turn snapping on or off

-No 'undo' option :nuke:

-Can't snap to the bottom or top of an object

-Small variety of objects

-Can't rotate object on every axis

-Can't make minor and incrimental adjustments :nuke:

-Not all objects can be phased into landmass

-Objects can't phase into each other

I put the radioactive material symbol next to issues that I belive HAVE to be addressed to fix building in this game, while everything else would just be nice to have. Now a good example (In my opinion) of how building should work is Halo's forge. More specifically Halo: Reach and Halo 4 which had a much more user friendly forge than Halo 3. Now I think it would be beneficial for Bethesda to take a look at these two game's building mechanics and see what works. After all in those two games everything I've listed (or most) was addressed. Now this doesn't mean I want Fallout 4's building to turn into Halo's forge, I just think that the forge in Halo is well implemented and Fallout 4 could take some pointers from it. There are tons of games out there with bulding mechanics that are as good if not bettter than Halo so if you have one in mind go ahead and list it. I think it's time to move onto the next issue.

2. Settlements:

Again, like building, settlements are a cool concept but just not implemented nearly as well as it could've or should've. The main issue with settlements is just the tedium, it's hard to tell what objects are assigned to whom or if someone is actually assigned to an object. Assigning an object requires hunting down someone who isn't already doing something then running half a mile across your settlement to the object you actually want to assign. Not to mention you don't know the max amount of food someone can be assigned to, generally they'll just work all the food in the immediate area but it would be nice to know how large of any area they'll work in.

This is all especially aggrivating when you consider the fact that Bethesda already has a game that gets it right, Fallout Shelter. In Fallout Shelter you can pull up a list and see who's assigned to what, then you can assign someone to something from that list. Not only that but you can check on each individuals happiness and the factors that affect it, which gives you some insight into why your Vault's average happiness is the way it is.

I think the settlements in Fallout 4 should be moddled more closely to Fallout Shelter, with you being able to pull up a list of all avaible settlers and whether or not they are assigned to something (and what that assignment is if they are). This list would also contain things that need to be assigned and factors that are either adding to or detracting from your settlements overall happiness. It would also be nice to see a little AoE circle when you assign someone to food that shows all the plants in that area they'll work when assigned.

Those are my major gripes with the settlement system so lets move onto number 3

3. Quests:

Now when I say this I don't mean all quests, in fact most of the quests in Fallout 4 are either great or perfectly fine. It's the quests that you can get multiple times that I have a problem with. Sure it's cool that you can run back to the same few people and always get quests so you always have something to do. But these quests are just so repetitive, in most cases they're just the same quest over and over and over. There are some people that give you slightly more variety in these quests, but even then it's not guaranteed you'll get a quest from them every time you talk to them, unlike the other people. All I ask is for a more diverese selection of quests for these NPCs to give out, while this isn't a major issue it is one that shortens the games life and one that I think needs to be addressed.

Now onto complaint number four which isn't one that needs to be adressed, in fact it doesn't really affect the game in any capacity. But it is something I think would improve upon the game if it were added. So if you haven't played the game at all yet or haven't seen anything of the game this will probably be a very very very very minor spoiler. I doubt it is a spoiler but since it's pertaining to the story...slightly, I thought I would add that. Moving on.

4. Your Spouse:

One thing that bugged me is that fact you can always go back to Vault 111 and your spouse's corpse will always be there and you can't do anything with it. I mean you can still open up the cryo chamber and everything, and when you go down there with a companion they even comment on it, often telling you how sorry they are. Yet you still can't do anything with the body, at the very least you would think a dialouge option would be avaible. But no, nothing. You can open and close the door to your dead spouse's cryo champer to your hearts content but that's all you can do. Now most people might not care about this, but I actually find it to be a missed opportunity. I mean it would be nice to maybe be able to leave flowers by their cryo chamber or be able to remove their body and give them a funeral. Or hell go on some huge questline to find the holy grail* and bring your spouse back to life, I don't know. I just wish you were able to do something and I think if you were I think it would really make the game feel complete.

*Note: I don't actually know whether or not the holy grail can bring the dead back to life, please do not blame me if your holy grail does not work in this fashion.

Well that's about it for what I have to say, let me know what you think or if you have anything to add.
