When is the big decision between factions?

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 8:21 am

Hey guys,
Trying to avoid spoilers now...so...basically, when is it a good idea to halt the main story so I can carry on working for all factions?

I have just built that 'thing' for the railroad. Quest title is The Molecular Level. I don't want to proceed the main story just yet, with so many faction side quests available. So, when is a good time to stop working on the main story?

Thanks.

You don't have to follow the main story to find and join the Railroad...I didn't. I only got as far as finding Nick and I already got deep with the Railroad, Minutemen and BoS. I know there probably will come a quest soon that will force me to choose sides but I've been juggling them so far.

According to the wiki

Spoiler
After completing http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/The_Molecular_Level, the main quest's structure becomes similar to the one from http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout:_New_Vegas. There are four different branches, one for each faction, and certain events in those quests can make certain factions hostile to the http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Sole_survivor, thus locking them from those branches and failing all of that faction's on-going quests. In some situations, this can be delayed (or even accelerated) with certain actions or certain dialogue choices.

Spoiler contains a quest name and talks about faction quest tree structure with an obvious possible plot result re: factions.

I have joined all three, but there's another faction. I am hoping it's possible to join them too without locking anything out.

the fourth faction you can only join by continuing the main quest. To have all factions in play you must complete...

Spoiler
Minutemen - Complete 'old guns'

BOS - complete 'Show no mercy'

Railroad - complete Tradecraft

If you have completed these three quests for the three factions you can join the 4th faction without being locked out of the others. That said you can't keep all factions happy indefinitely as my above spoiler showed even dialogue choices can effect your standing so there is no clear map as of yet to threading the needle once you are a member of all four.

Spoiler contains quest names and talks about how choice can effect faction standing in the broadest terms.
