Disc versus digital

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 2:07 pm

Sorry for what must be a repeat post (I did check the forum, and did a Google search), but will it be worth buying the disc version bearing in mind that you still have to download a whole load of data from Steam? Why not just buy the Steam version in that case? Also, if I did buy the disc version, would that be spinning away in the drive while I was playing? I considered putting Fallout 4 on my Christmas wishlist and the disc version is easy to add, but the Steam version not so much.

Hmm, maybe a mod can move it.

I always used to buy physical copies too, but like you say it's getting harder all the time. I don't actually play games nearly as much as I used to, but F4 was always going to be an essential purchase.

Well, it is definitely easier (esp. for parents/grandparents/etc) to buy as a gift, in disc form. And it will let you skip like 4GB(?) of the download.

And no, you won't need to keep the disc in the drive. Even if it installs of that, it still registers in your Steam account and runs like any other Steam program.

(I ended up going with the digital version, when every other Day1/AAA game I've gotten has been on disc. But that's only because I wanted to take advantage of pre-loading before the release day, so that I could actually play it that day. If I were buying it now, I'd get the disc.)

Someone in another thread was complaining that the entire game is not on the disc, only a small portion of it. The majority of the game still has to be downloaded.

OK looks like I'll go with the disc version. As long as I can play without the noise of the disc spinning (like the Steam version would have been) then that's fine.

I'm not in any rush anyway, because I know how buggy the Fallout games can be on release, so the longer I wait hopefully the less bugs there will be.

I still remember playing New Vegas on Xbox 360, and the doctor guy talking to me right at the beginning, and his head was rotating. A creepy but hilarious bug.

You buy a disc if you are switching computers soon, you buy digital if you do not like taking up a disc drive whenever you play it.
