I mean... it does an unbelievable amount of damage, especially once it's fully upgraded. Is that actually intended?

I have a legendary Gauss rifle and it does [censored] tier damage.

I think it's a bug. A high end rifle with very rare and expensive ammunition should deal about 50-70 damage, moddable to about 84 damage.

Nope, its real it is just super hard to find ammunition for it so use it sparingly, I suggest with a huge scope so you can pick off very far away enemies at the start and have enough time to switch over to your normal gun by the time they figure out where you are.

Ammo isn't rare. pop some graqe mentats if you dont have 10 charisma and go to every vendor in the commonwealth and you'll have 300 gauss rounds in less than 10-15 minutes.

I still have over 600 2mm EC rounds in my inventory.

What level are you? I only found 1 vender who sells them and he only has 7 of them each time. (The robot in Goodneighbor)

I hit level 42 yesterday and nearly every merchant sells 2mm rounds.

- My level 3 weapon shops in my settlements actually have some now and than as well

- The weapon merchant in Diamond City as well (Rodrigo or something)

It does not seem so bugged to me as I have seen some similar damage ratings on some other weapons as well.
Some of them melee at even higher damage than the Gauss Rifle.

The Sacrificial dagger from Dunwich Borers for example.

Mine does 403 damage and it isn't even a legendary but the ammo isn't easier to find in containers and shops don't sell too much of it.

A GUASS Rifle shoots a projectile at an incredible speed with a devastating kinetic energy force ya it does high damage.
