I agree, I play Fallout games as "myself", not that I control some lad/lass.
If you want to know what many on the forum think, check the 2-3 threads on the subject. And the polls.
On the one hand, I'm pretty sure the protagonist is again silent, and that line was just for the show. I don't think BGS wants to leave the comfort zone so abruptly, the engine is the always recurring proof.
On the other hand I wouldn't be so against a voiced protagonist in Fallout (or TES for that matter), if BGS wants to try something different, why not, I'll reserve judgement and try to enjoy. It can be great as Mass Effect or it can be [censored], or anything between, they will deal with the consequences of their choice. Silent protagonist is not the epitome of role-playing, there are a [censored] ton of great RPGs with set, voiced protagonist.
Voiced protagonist would be a wonderful step forward.
Here's hoping...
no
it isn t it kills part of main reason why people love this franchise and the ES franchise
to do what you want
to go where you want
AND TO BE WHAT EVER YOU WANT
not only kills it immersion it also limis dialogue options
and basicly looks silly and can get annoying with all the cutscenes where the protagonist says something , in a emotional flat voice
it also seems so un bethesda like to do something like that especially when you know that the majority of people who play these games would not like it
Do what you want and be who ever you want is already limited by the game mechanics and writing. You are what you want within the limits and rules they created. You can't be an Acrobat in Skyrim because they removed the skill, the governing attribute and any sort of in-game depiction of Acrobats as a trade. You tiny agile Bosmer can't jump from roof to another better than a massive Orc because Bethesda wants so. Can you roleplay an Acrobat? Sure, in your imagination but you don't need a game to do that.
On the other hand a set voice for the playable character could bring more emotions and believable dialogue and interaction with the other characters. It's a trade of course, and I personally doubt Bethesda is willing to do this trade, but if they do there are advantages too. It's not like everyone needs to be silent in order to roleplay. I roleplay Geralt or Shepard quite nicely.
I just hope you can play as a woman...otherwise for me it would break the feeling of immersion. I love to role play as the sort of character I want her to be (which is the point of an RPG, right?), not what someone tells me she/he is!
as long as there is a option to turn it of for those wo doesn′t like it, I don′t mind personally and will most likely leave the voice on, my sense of immersion is not so frail as to be broken by it and in fact would add more life to the character in my book.
To say that the majority of people wouldn't like it is simply (I think baseless) speculation from your own preferences.
Skyrim and Fallout were criticised for being cold and emotionless, something first rate voice acting can help to remedy.
We'll know more at E3 I expect.

I can't think of any RPG that allows you to 'turn voice off' either.
there is no adcantage in a voice protagonist , only one who wins is the voice actor with a fat payskip
and the last thingg i want is to play with a voice protagonist that sounds like a archtypical white american hero/ crusader/ can only do good things, complete emotionless and complete without any soul
i really really would hate a voiced protagonist for the simple reasons it is not the kind of protagonist i want to play
i trued to play the mass effect trillogy and recently tried the witcher 3
even they are probably good games i stopped aftyer a few hours for the simple reason that i just cannot connect with the main protagonuist , , and if the same hapens here i guess i just going to pass on this game because i know from experience i will just give up after a few hours for the same reasons
and i am not the only one with this opinion if you look at the other bethesda game forums bouth Fallout and elder scrolls you find several polls about voiced protagonist and each time the no vorte wins with a large margin
and when i said i want to play a game where i can do what ever i want , be who ever i want i didn't mean game mechanics , i bloody kknow that the game has limits
wgat i meant if i made a character that looks like Kit Harrington , tha, he sounds remotely like him , and not like some stereotypical american D......bag
The thing about internet polls with 'large margins' is... they change, lol. I remember the 'six, kids and marriage' threads before Skyrim. The 'NO', 'NO WAY', 'HELL NO' options always got the most votes. The reasons were similar to today's, Bethesda can't into writing, ect... And then bam! evidence that Bethesda brings kids and marriage, and the polls changed to favorable, YES, YAY, etc... the bandwagon is strong in the interwebs!
I'm pretty sure a voiced player can be done well and really add to the engagement, if done like Mass Effect. Though I feel that ship has already sailed. According the leaked documents from Kotaku (which have been right about everything else so far) Bethesda did casting calls for a voiced player.
I'm pretty sure we can play as a man or woman, the casting call was for both a male and female version of the player.
Did you see the romance and marriage threads here? Everyone is still saying no because Bethesda showed how incompetent they were with it in Skyrim.
Voiced protagonist will limit RP, alienate a large number of their fans, severely limit dialogue options and choices, use a large amount of budget. Not to mention Bethesda has shown their writing, consequences, narrative and characters to be their weakest quality (does quality work there?).
Absolutely no to voiced protagonist and it will be a deal-breaker for me. Obviously what do they care about me though? I only purchase the game and all DLC twice so that's just a drop in the ocean.
