So why is this dog so important to the game? I hope the main quest is not about the dog anyway

Seriously the annoying dog in Skyrim was the most annoying dog in the history of video games.

I'd prefer a cat if the pet is forced on us, it can be hidden in the inventory and it can access narrow places to kill the rats.

Its kinda considered a tradition to have one, like having goombas in a mario game.

I've never understood the lack of cats, they breed like rabbits and are masters of self preservation, they would be common.

Who needs dogs&cats? I want my freaking eagle pet to sit on my shoulder and go scout. Bethesda you hear me? EAGLES AND HAWKS for TES 6!

I like the cat idea, just to have one in your house/settlement roaming the place, killing pesky vermin. Also they don't get in the way. But I've never liked the idea having companions along for the ride, so as long as we have the option to leave the dog at home whenever I feel like it.

they ate the cats. Now upstanding patriotic vault dweller has to choose other pets than cat.

It would be nice to see some evedence of other pets that dwellers had. Like birds, snails and many more.

I'm happy to have a dog follower. Mans best friend, besides I don't like cats.

Unless you have a tiger, I doubt your cat would do much against mole rats and rad roaches.
