[Discussion] Unarmed in Fallout 4

Well Skyrim does have a pair of gloves which increases unarmed damage and with the right gear + perks, you can really make unarmed EXTREMELY deadly with these gloves on. So it wasn't completely useless, just a hard build to do in Skyrim.

What skyrim needed was a dedicated skill to unarmed like in the previous TES games T^T it's kind of hollow knowing that you could only magnify your damage only through enchantment or khajiiti racial bonus...

If there's only a perk that alters your unarmed attacks... e.g. a perk that changes some of your attacks to kicks that are faster or a perk allowing you to combo your unarmed attacks

Where else could you an average guy/gal punch a hulking mass of snarling green muscle (not hulk) to oblivion than in Fallout? XD

Though I've not played SR3, I think I get you. It would be nice to have something more than punch and block.

IIRC, there was a perk you could get in New Vegas that allowed you to do an uppercut or something - though I would still like unarmed combat to be a bit...meatier? If that makes sense.

I also remember in the E3 trailer, there was a small bit where you saw a lady in a boxing ring or something like that. Does she slam him to the ground or something like that? I'm gonna have to chase it up again, just to be sure so don't take my word for it, haha :P

Ah damn, it appears she just hits him with a melee weapon, and he either falls to the ground, bounced from it or tried to get back up but she hit him down again. Brutal :P you can see it at around 1:17 ish.

Unfortunately, after I rewatched it again and slowing it down, it was more like gladiatorial combat :( she's whacking that guy with an aluminum bladed baseball bat...

Nevertheless, I want an option to grapple enemies or even choking attacks for sneak attacks (would be more realistic than the sneaking uppercuts we have in FO:NV hahaha)

EDIT: for the choking attack point, I really want to see that at least happening as a sneak attack finishing move. They did something like that in Skyrim. Why not in FO4?

Aw :c At least we get some sort of arena hopefully? That'll still be awesome.

Yeah, I agree - plus you add flavour to unarmed and err, your badassery levels increase. Hahaha, wasn't also with the uppercut in FNV that if you viewed it in third person it became some weird leg sweep/kick? Or am I getting my wires mixed?

Hmmmm I'm still unsure because when I play melee/unarmed characters, I often switch to third person. I might check on that later...

Anyway, I'm optimistic that unarmed will return in FO4. It've been a part of Fallout, don't you agree? From that boxing ring in FO2 to the superb collection of unarmed weapons and techniques in FO:NV...

Speaking of unarmed...wasnt there a boxing/MMA ring in one of the E3 shows?

I loved doing unarmed, low intelligence runs in all the fallout's though it probably might not be possible anymore to since the voiced protag is a thing so RP'ing as Rocky Balboa with down syndrome on super steroids won't be as fun anymore. I doubt they'd record lines for conversations with low int, but I'll be pleasantly surprised if they do.

Besides that I'm sure they definitely improved melee though, basing off what we've seen from footage of the gunplay and speaking of footage there's a very small glimpse of some https://youtu.be/OzV1GlDDlv8?t=1m21s exactly on 1:21. Doesn't look like anything we've had before.

Why would anyone do that? Beating them to death with Boxing Tape is far easier.

My preferred playstyle since FO1. Unarmed ftw.

I'm hoping it gets the weapon customization we saw for guns/melee, as well as some nifty perks. I would also LOVE the cool Doom4/Skyrim first person unarmed finishing animations!

The arena we saw in the trailer has me hyped if it's like the FO2 boxing matches.

Yeah, it would be a bit hard to make a lot of characters with the voiceover.

Still, I hope unarmed makes a return, but I almost guarentee it's going to be either gone or barely present at all. The power fist will obviously make a return, but it'll probably just increase base unarmed damage like those gloves in Skyrim, and bare knuckle fighting will be entirely useless outside of bar fights.

They didn't feel like doing much with unarmed in Skyrim. A game with a heavy focus on melee.

Fallout being a FPS now, i can't see you being able to throw more than a jab.

FO3 and FO:NV was a bit FPS, isn't it? (Although FO4 is surely a lot more FPS than those...)

And seeing that crafting system, where you can also modify a melee weapon, I think, unarmed skill and weapons, being in almost the same alley as melee weapons, you know, by being close-ranged an all, might have a chance of returning again!

I really do hope so, but if it's not happening, well, what can I do? I'm not the developer...

Just have to wait for mods to fix that!

Fallout is NOT a FPS just because they improve the combat...

Well improve the combat might not be the right word for some people...

Let's just say that Fallout is not a FPS because they simply changed the "view point"!

It would be cool to have takedowns or even unarmed combos ala MMA style moves that you have to learn from somewhere.

Jetpack-powered uppercut! While in power-armor. Make it happen Bethesda!

Unarmed is clearly the superior to Melee. It's faster and uses Endurance, so your health and defense are governed under the same SPECIAL, meaning you take less damage and live longer, regardless. That combined with the fact that Spiked Knuckles (in Fo3) were OP-AF and the Deathclaw Gauntlet ignored enemy DR while absolutely destroying their armor and is obtainable in early game with a tiny bit of fortitude points me toward the belief that it will make a return and be upgraded with some better perks in Fo4.
I think unarmed perks could include being able to block blunt melee weapons, a disarm counterattack that has a chance to automatically place the disarmed weapon into player's inventory and a neck-breaker sneak attack.
Also, dual power-fists for PA users. Single power-fist when not using PA.
Lastly, punching a Behemoth in the leg until it drops dead? Yes.

Well, in Fallout Unarmed and Melee were in pair with each other, but already in Fallout 2 Unarmed was superior to Melee due to mega power fist had ignore of % of enemy armor property and hand to hand evade perk, while super sledge had knockback (which for melee char was actually bad lol).

Question is, does Bethesda understands how important this skill is in Fallout? I hope they do.
