black screen when launching game

Hello:

I submitted a ticket to Bethesda for this issue. I wanted to see if anyone had a workaround or if someone else was having the same issue.

I'm having the issue described What do I do if Fallout 4 is launching with a black screen on PC? (I cannot add the link, don't have permission)

My issue started over the past couple of days. When the problem first started, I could end the nonresponsive program with task manager, relaunch and everything would work ok). Now it doesn't. I have 110 hours into the game according to Steam.

When I first installed the game, when the first launcher comes up, it automatically detected the video card settings, and set the video to Ultra.

Now, when I launch the first Fallout4 launcher, if I click on Options --> Reset. Fallout 4 will go through auto-detection and give this message:

Your video hardware was not identified. Video settings have been set for low quality.

It still launches to a black screen.

I updated the NVidia drivers. Same issue.

I reverted to last version of NVidia drivers when I originally installed the game. Same issue.

Both options above were using the "clean install" option under custom when installing the drivers.

I disabled the firewall and antivirus. Same issue.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the game. Same issue.

In the instructions on the general help article from Bethesda. It said to launch the NVidia control panel --> click on Manage 3D settings --> add fallout 4.exe and set parameters...etc.

Fallout4 and the launcher were already in the control panel, as well as steam and a few other applications on my pc.

In global settings, the CUDA/GPUs listed was the NVidia GeForce Titan X Black.

It was listed under the fallout 4 exe and launcher as well.

I'm not sure what changed making the game launch to a black screen and become unresponsive.

I can launch and play all the other games in my steam library.

Windows 7 64-bit

Intel Core i7-3970x @ 3.5GHz (12 CPUs)

32 GB Ram

NVidia GeForce Titan X Black

Thank you for your time.

WHat GPU is listed in your Fallout4prefs.ini?

C:\................\Documents\My Games\Fallout4

Curious to see what this does. Try the FO4 nexus launcher. http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/102/?%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0Click on files and download manually.

It should ask about setting it to launcher FO4. CLick YES.

You can also try the FO4 script extender. Just copy the files to your main FO4 directory. http://f4se.silverlock.org/

SD3Device="NVidia GeForce GTX TITAN BLACK" was in the Fallout4prefs.ini under c:\.....My Games\Fallout4

I tried the FO4 nexus launcher. Same issue.

I do have a question though. There is another Fallout4prefs.ini under C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout4\Fallout4 does that ini need to be the same as under /My Games/Fallout 4?

They are definitely not the same for my system, the one under steam has 169 lines, the one under My Games\Fallout4 has 155 lines.

The one under steamapps also does not have the video card listed.

OK, tried some more experiments.

In options on the launcher, without changing anything, the aspect ratio is grayed out. If I hit reset, the message appears 'cannot detect video hardware'.

Launch the game and it hangs up on a black screen. Have to close out with control-alt-delete, and end the program.

In options on the launcher, click windowed mode. The aspect ratio is selectable. Change the screen resolution to match the monitor's. [If I hit reset, the message appears 'cannot detect video hardware' (then have to change settings again).]

Launch the game, works in both Ultra and High

In options on the launcher, clicked both windowed mode and borderless. The aspect ratio is selectable. Change the screen resolution to match the monitor's. [If I hit reset, the message appears 'cannot detect video hardware'(then have to change settings again).]

Launch the game, works in both Ultra and High.

I have not changed the settings in options, since the original install or reinstall. The message still appears for not detecting video hardware, which was not the case in the original install.

Without those two options checked, the game crashes at launch to a black screen 100% of the time, which is odd because I never checked those two options until this morning trying to troubleshoot the options. Checking the two options didn't work this morning, but it seems to be working now.

It may be sporadic launching using those two options, but at least I can play the game again (hopefully, it will not degrade to crashing every time with those two options checked).

I'm going to leave the support ticket open, so Bethesda can look into the issue.
