111,000 lines of dialogue

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 1:24 pm

Skyrim wasn't exactly rushed, but they did decide that a lot of the stuff they wanted to do for the Civil war couldn't make it in.

That is a shame but it happens.

In any project, you have to prioritize and if some thing isn't coming to together and the deadline is approaching then it may get cut.

They had to release Skyrim during the holiday season to max sales and I can understand that.

If nothing else it helped fun Fallout 4.

Fallout New Vegas could have used a couple of months extra, but they did real good with the time they had.

The New Vegas Uncut mod series is one of my favorite.

I would have loved to have seen the waking up the morning after a serious drinking session to find out that you and Cassidy had been married by the King.

Now Dragon Age II was rushed.

I'm planning at least 3 playthroughs with some very different Sole Survivors.

I don't care for the pure evil route, but at least one will be a mercenary bastard.

That means I'll have the different personalities protagonist dialog, the male and female versions of the protagonist dialog, the different faction and companion dialog, the dialog changes depending on the Sole Survivor using different means to accomplish things, and the dialog changes depending on what quests I take.

The idea that in each of those three playthroughs over half the dialog I hear will be new to me is very impressive.

I wonder how many lines are going to be "I Used To Be A Baseball Player but then I took a bullet in the knee and am now a city guard". :D

I stated TW3 probably had more, but am happy to see I was mistaken. I never specificed DAI had the most dialogue either. SWTOR, without a doubt, has more lines of dialogue than anything in the entire entertainment medium. What BGS is doing is certainly a major departure from previous games, but we'll have to see how the dialogue ultimately stands. Quality ultimate is what we want, not necessarily quantity.

Also, 80k lines of dialogue is not "nearly half" of 110k lines of dialogue.

Possibly a slight misunderstanding - "half again as many" means 50% extra, or 1.5 times as much.

Although you're right, 80k is more like 75% of 111k than 66.66%

[edit]

I'm slightly surprised SWTOR doesn't have FO4 beaten by an even bigger margin.

I never said you did. I used it as an example becuase it was thier newest game, and better reflected the avarge number of lines a Bioware game has comapred to TOR, since TOR is thier only mmo, whereas DAI is a single-player RPG like most of thier past games.

They're saying there are 111,000 lines of dialogue when referring to the voice recording. This tells me they are counting the now voiced protagonist lines in that number, which wouldn't have been counted in previous fallout or elder scrolls games. Without having first hand knowledge, I'm reasonably sure this is a misleading statement designed to make people make the assumption that there's double the dialogue when in reality there isn't, they're just counting the protagonist's lines in that number.

I'm pretty sure that when they do count the protagonist lines of dialog in other games.

I don't think they count lines of dialog done in different protagonist voices, but if you only count the protagonist lines of dialog once, it is still 97K lines.

I think the important takeaway from all of this isn't the number of lines, but the "more than Fallout 3 and Skyrim combined" part. That means more to me than a number.

But that's what I'm saying is misleading. The statement was about recorded lines, which until FO4 recorded lines did not include the player's lines. I think the number is misleading because roughly half of the lines are going to be player lines, which means there will likely only be about 55 to 60,000 NPC lines. Nothing to sneeze at, but not as many as they want you to believe.

Here's an example. I make a game with 500 lines of recorded NPC dialogue, no voiced protagonist. Then I make a game with 600 lines of recorded NPC dialogue, no voiced protagonist. THEN I make a game with 600 lines of recorded NPC dialogue and 550 lines of recorded protagonist dialogue. I then boast that recording for 3rd game is finished, with 1150 recorded lines which is more recorded lines than the first two games combined. Do you see my point? It's not that the 3rd game really has any more dialogue than the previous games, I'm just also recording player dialogue and counting that in my number. I'm intentionally misleading you, trying to make you assume the 3rd game has double the dialogue.

Uhhh...

26,000 lines, the total number for both PC's, is only 23% of the total 111,000.

Yeah, we've already established that each of the voice actors have recorded about 13,000 lines, so there are 26,000 lines coming from the player character in that number.

I think awesome possum did a heck of a job explaining (maybe why hes called that)

But here it is so even I could understand err maybe.

We were told EACH protag (male and female) did 13000 lines over there 7 year stint thats where his 26000 number is from and granted some of them might be close to the same line, Still I bet its going to be worth a play through to see different delivery.

But we know now cause they said there's 111000 Lines in the game Taking what we were told the (Protags spoke) off that bingo your 85000 lines for npcs n quest givers give or take what they rounded off.

(I do get you point H-D but this is a crap load without your character I don't think there being sneaky with there numbers, I suspect there pretty damn proud)
