That walking away thing could have some really cool implications.. (like someone saying "hey, don't walk away when I'm talking to you.") On the other hand, I could see that we might get some funny/annoying bugs with this. Like .. what if the character you're talking to gets attacked mid conversation? Will they continue to converse and fight at the same time?. There could also be instances of someone panicking and running away from you while at the same time, carrying on a casual conversation.
This is a BGS game. Before Morrowind (excluding Redguard), all BGS games were first person only. Even today, BGS makes their games with first person in mind first. Third person is optional and an additional feature. Not to mention, third person is still pretty bad with BGS games, although it has gotten better.
We haven't seen enough to really say but with VATs being real time I'd think that other parts (pip boy, lock pick, conversations) would also happen in real time. As soon as I heard about the walking away from convo feature I thought to myself "that's because I'm getting hit over the head by a raider". I'd think if they were implementing the feature they'd stop a convo. But I could also see a bug or two where the NPC keeps talking lol
There's likely to be some bits that switch into third person - like sitting down in chairs, and VATS/killcam sequences. It's been similar in previous games (prompting various threads of "how dare it go into third person for 5-10 seconds! Immersion ruined!")
On the Oculus rift it's pretty Gut-wrenching to have your camera suddenly disembodied. (But that doesn't/won't have official support, and not many use it) Other than that I don't mind the switch to 3rd during killcams, etc.
I know what you mean, only for the opposite reason.
I play in 3rd-person and I absolutely detested it when Oblivion and Fallout 3 yanked me out of my point-of-view in conversations. It was especially disorienting when NPCs like Glarthir or Hirtel force-greeted my character. Having the camera violently spin around for no apparent reason actually made me physically nauseous.
Less so for me on a traditional monitor. There it doesn't bother me at all. Just with the headset, Camera movement being disconnected from your own causes motion sickness.
Edit: Unless its a very low FOV game.
For dialog, IIRC Todd Howard confirmed in an interview during E3 that you could do dialog in straight first person mode. He even said that the cinematic dialog was a late addition to the game.
Otherwise, I'm pretty sure we'll still be put into third-person mode for most of the interactable objects, like furniture and crafting stations; after using a mod for Skyrim that enables those animations in first person, I can understand why Bethesda made the choice.
I really hope I can literally press the un-holster button and shoot the person in the face all in real time. I also when you do [Intimidate] or something that you actually punch them in the face and they react accordingly.
Dialogue is forced third person, I thought that was made clear with the demo and gameplay videos. It's basically their version of the Bioware dialogue system with different camera shots and the like to make it more cinematic.
He literally said you could play it in first person during the demo. https://youtu.be/D5esyZPt5Jo?t=11m54s.
edit: https://youtu.be/bNgEO6ehqp0?t=4m the interview I mentioned earlier where he mentions the cinematic dialog as a late addition, about four minutes in.
Oh my mistake, considering the lack of info on FO4 marketing wise its not surprising I'd be misinformed.
Ah, don't sweat it. I wonder if they showed off first-person dialog in the Quakecon/Gamescom footage.
I'm not sure if ill be using that cinematic camera dealie in my game. Need to play for a while to see how things work with both options before I commit. Its not like those zooming killcams in New Vegas which I knew right away I didn't enjoy and turned them off.
In the few games I've used it, I actually really like the feel of first-person conversations. But I still want to use the cinematic option some of the time; maybe I can set it so that it only kicks in in third-person mode?
