New S.P.E.C.I.A.L Video out - Perception

This reply made me smile.

I thought 'overhyping' was about doing too much marketing which is found to have over-promoted the game.

If Bethesda's approach of not saying very much - 1 showcase plus 7 x 2 minute cartoons that are cute but say little could hardly be called 'overhyping' but it is clever.

As there is so little to talk about, people (us included) are speculating about it at length.

I'm hoping stealing ammo clips will be a thing in Fallout 4. :fallout:

I think it goes both ways. J.J. Abrams has made a career of overhyping his work by making a big production over the fact that he doesn't tell you anything about it. That said, I wouldn't say that's what Bethesda is doing, with the possible exception of the story.

If Fallout is overhyped, than so is The Walking Dead. They don't tell you anything about the story each season either.

But do the makers of that show make a point about how they've improved their storytelling and then refuse to actually flesh out the story, simultaneously trying to promote a feature of their show without actually elaborating on it at all?

why would u want to get spoils about the story???? plus this mini vid are just for fun, they are just doing a really small Marketing campaign. If u want to look about what Bethesda did to hype thier games was the first E3 show where they announce 4 games, 2 that release this year, with other 2 coming next year and one of those game even as small at it is, is a game for a new platform.

I think you may be right.

I have to admit the weapon and armor craft under str kinda made my mood sour.. briefly hehe (expect its cause I am not the most brawny fellow so bias... but anything Conan can lift i can to, well with a chain hoist an a pully or two)

The armor bit does makes since since i expect pounding out metal armor is akin to blacksmithing (insert image of body builder knitting here)

still not sold on weapon craft but adding drum belts, and barbell brain busters to the stock of your rifle...

I expect its all gonna be good

Full details on what I believe the Weapon Crafting skill/perk is all about will be coming very soon. Also, not only do these 5 weapon/armor crafting skills fit perfectly together, they also change things up for my 13 Primary Skills in a very interesting way. Oh, and repair...

EDIT: many new details have come to light following a conversation with another forum user, who I will of course mention when I update my thread

I didn't say I did. All I really want to know is the date we leave the Vault. That said, promoting how much your storytelling has improved while offering nothing to back it up comes off as a tad trying to have it both ways. You don't get to tell me something is awesome and then not offer up anything to pique my interest on the subject, without me regarding your boasts with suspicions.

Take it as you will, but my predicted date for leaving the vault, as explained http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1528530-revolution-216, is Sunday June 21st 2285.

well we know something about the date, we know the game will be after Fallout 3 and before Fallout NV, so we can assume the date will be 200year or a little more.

Until I see something in game, I'm not buying that timeline. I don't see why you'd set it so close to the events of Fallout 3, since it would prevent you from extrapolating on lore you established there, and I don't see what having it set before New Vegas would add to either game.

Personally, considering the setting, I'm placing my money on 2283, as it would be the 500th anniversary of the end of the American Revolution.

if Skyrim is any signs, thats the thing, they dont want to canonise the events of 3, at least not the actions of players

Except all TES games work under the assumption that every quest was done, in the best possible way. They establish the canon events by default.

On the flip side, the only quest whose outcome would logically have any effect on Boston, which is like 400+ miles away, is the turning on of the water purifier, and even then the only logical effect would be some NPCs chatting about how those guys over in D.C. got a lot of fresh water now.

then there is that TES game where they made like 5 endings canon...at the same time, so yeah they are clearly eager to keep player actions...muddy.

They only did that because they realized how idiotic it was to have an epic fantasy adventure, that was bound to have a sequel, have multiple conflicting endings.

And then they never did anything like it again.

"I particularly admire the conceit of the Dragon-Break, which I think was Kirkbride’s scheme, probably collaborative with Kurt Kuhlmann, who was his passionate partner in design thought crimes. What a wonderful designer response to the criminally irresponsible design scheme of having Daggerfall’s multiple endings in an epic heroic fantasy setting certain to be followed by sequels." ~ Ken Rolston

I think perception being tied in with the lock picking and picket pocket skills shown in the video also has to do with the fact that events are real time now. You'll need perception to alert you that someone is watching you now.

Still, I expect the actions of the protagonist from 3 to be kept very muddy, to leave things open so if a player wanna see there playthrough of 3 as canon they free to do so.

since folks at Quakecon/gamescom saw that loot screens are real time, not impossible other actions are real time too.

They (BGS) are not overhyping the story. They are merely keeping quiet about what the story is beyond you having a spouse and child, ending up in a vault as the bombs drop, and emerging 200 years later. Telling anything more than that isn't needed. I want to experience the story as it unfolds, not have it laid out in great detail before I even get to play it.

I don't want to know what happens in the vault, where the spouse and kid are or if they survived. I want my PC to find that out in the game. I don't want to know all the factions and have a preconceived notion of who is supposed to be "good" and who is "evil". My PC will experience it in the game. I like not knowing what BoS faction is in Boston. If Dr Li is there. Did that crazy revenge seeking ghoul from the swamp get to Boston and start dishing out retribution? Will he be the one to tell us what happened in the DC wasteland?

Yeah, to be honest Bethesda isn't really trying to say that their storytelling has improved a lot. In an interview after Skyrim, Todd Howard talked about how they'll be focusing more on making great characters; they talked about companions during a Quakecon presentation where they showed us (them) a new companion. And most of the other talk around story is around the voiced protagonist, which they've definitely been showing; not to mention the numerous interviews with both voice actors.

That would be really cool although I have no idea how it'd work.. That'd be one amazing reach around ability you'd have. I can see people having ammo in their inventory and you get to steal that. But think about how funny it'd be to have such an amazing sneak ability that you could sneak through an entire camp, empty everyone's clips... then simply stand up and jog away while they all fidget with their guns.

There were high-level Pickpocket perks in Skyrim that let you steal the clothes off of someone's back, as well as their equipped weapon. It was ridiculous, but it was also ridiculous. :P

The 37% was definitely the gun, which is highlighted as an option, and he subsequently shoots it out of his hand. The 17% is the legs, which appear to be lumped into the same number (maybe because his legs are actually shown as a single unit in the video and not spread apart).
