Action Points for Bullet Time instead of VATS

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 9:19 pm

Hello !

I never really liked the concept of VATS in Fallout 3 from one side because it didn′t feel real and it broke a bit my immersion by having your character shoot by himself with random percentages etc... but from the other side I felt that by not using it at all I was putting myself in a disadvantage by "wasting" Action Points, which are a resource in the end.

But I have been thinking that it could be cool if you could have the option of expending your Action Points on some kind of bullet time where time would slow just a bit instead, allowing you to aim by yourself.

That way you would be able to opt for not using VATS while still using Action Points for another thing.

What do you guys think ?

I think that BSG already did this. Watch the E3 video.

I honestly never seen proof of some slow mo mode, beyond the changes to VATS.

Near the end of the E3 footage the PC shoots a Super Mutant Brute with a shotgun in sighted mode. The sequence is very clearly slower than normal, and that's even before he takes the shot.

Yeah I have seen that, but I just thought it was in VATS and just after ordering the shot. I hope you are right :)

which honestly could just be a first person kill cam animation, like Skyrim could have, so Im staying sceptical.

Fairly certain he says that VATS only slows time instead of stopping it.

When the scene with the Super Mutant Brute comes on, you can clearly see that the shot has not yet been taken, but the action has slowed right down. Personally, I think this is a bonus effect of Concentrated Fire. This makes sense considering it's requirement, which suggests that there's a lot more to it than in Fallout 3.

that is Kill Cam, VATS is part of Fallout, but on Fallout 4 they improve after, now it doesnt stop time anymore just super slow it.

This makes no sense at all. The shot is not even taken in V.A.T.S. mode, as can be confirmed by the lack of any kind of V.A.T.S. targeting in the scene. Even if this was kill cam in sighted mode, it would be initiated after the shot was taken, which is clearly not the case.

I think so too. Doesn't one of the perk descriptions (Concentrated Fire, yes, I believe) mention slowing time outside of VATS, but still using Action Points?

You know what I think it is? Bullet time when you aim down your sights, possibly enabled by a perk (or by holding our breath). Skyrim had it for archery and it worked really well.

Consider kill cams in 3/NV could include animations of readying a shot, thats doesnt disprove kill cam.

not impossible and a very welcomed mechanic.

In Fallout New Vegas (and Fallout 3) I used a Bullet Time mod that basically acted like the Fallout-4 VATS (in terms of slowing things down instead of stopping time) but of course since it ~wasn't~ VATS, I still had to free-aim and shoot things but I could ~move~ which VATS did not let you do in previous games. This let me sliiiiiiiide around a corner in slow-mo and shoot foes before they twigged to my presence.

Frankly, I wonder if the slowed-time effect on Fallout-4's VATS will be slow ~enough~ for me to mouse over the various body parts, pick which one I want to shoot, fire, and then move to another target, locate a spot to shoot and fire, etc. With the old VATS you could tab among your targets, select which ones and where you want to shoot them and then "release" VATS to watch your character perform some insane gun-kata moves, clearing entire rooms of (weak) foes "instantly".

My reaction time isn't what it used to be a decade or so ago, and I just worry that I may have to mod the slowed-time-factor a bit (which is, I am sure, likely to be an early mod).

Methinks they want a slow-time mode where they can still aim and shoot freely, instead of having to pick out limbs and take a percentage chance based on stats.

I wonder if this is something you would need to activate once you are aiming down the sights. I think it would be rather annoying if it automatically made you go into slow mo every time you aimed down the sights and wasted AP with that perk.
