Bartering - hostility if offended by your offering?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 3:36 am

So, in the charisma video, they showed vault-boy get stabbed with a fork when he offers whats regarded as a "cheeky" offering for a higher quality item..
So, i was figuring maybe theres some mechanic where you haggle (kinda like a modded oblivion version) and if you say? Demand 200% value on an item and the price is exceedingly high - your reputation may be damaged or they outright shoot you for even suggesting such a price if you're unknown to them. What do you think? Would it work as a mechanic or will we never see this ingame..

I dont think so, its the same cartoonish over the top violence we seen in other videos, just there to add a dark chuckle, I assume trading will more or less work as it always has.

It's over the top to shoot someone over demanding too much. I'd certainly like to see some kind of haggling system that's influenced by the player's perks, charisma, and luck. I liked how in the Witcher 3, you could haggle over a contract's bounty, but I wasn't really sure what the influencing factors were. There seemed to be a cut off and exceeding that would always just result in annoying the contractor.

The possibility that we can haggle and potentially get attacked if we're insulting with our prices, I think is highly unlikely.

The possibility that we can haggle and there is a vender reputation system in place, less unlikely, but still fairly remote. Although I think I'd enjoy it.

The possibility that we can haggle at all, still unlikely, but most probable of the options in my opinion. From the video alone I'd have said there was a good chance of this happening, but with what we saw of the Cap Collector perk, there would be a somewhat strange overlap if haggling was included. Granted, the higher perk levels of Cap Collector are still unknown, so it's still a possibility. I'd welcome it if it was included.

No way. I'd bet it just being a quest or dialog related options. Think barter options in fallout new vegas. There if your barter was to low they just refused you. Now if you do something outrageous they may respond with gun fire.

Or a modified version of what you are talking about, a dialog option with various merchants to try and gain a discount. That would be insanely simple to implement.

Getting shot for demanding too much money in a trade....that's some really insecure traders.

I doubt we'll be able to actually barter ourselves, as in we make an offer and see if the AI accepts it. However, it would be interesting if we could do that, and if you aggravated the NPC enough, they would refuse to trade with you for a few days.

I remember Morrowind would allow you to raise or lower the price of a transaction. Say you bought two steal halberds, a silver spear, and a dwarven crossbow. The items had a total price but you could lower the amount and if your Mercantile skill was good enough, they would accept your deal. If your mercantile wasn't good, and they rejected your deal, they would also take a disposition hit which would raise general prices.

It would be cool if you could gamble with some traders or towns folk, like how they did it in Fallout Tactics. Just highlight the item you want to shift & click gamble, it has to be an item of semi equal value or they'll tell you where to go with bells on. its gutting when you lose but hey that's gambling for ya! It was fun to play with in the aforementioned game

If checks are percentage based, It would be nice to see say a slap to the face for trying to romance, or talk up an NPC, and failing.

I think a majority of the special videos are just purely for entertainment.

The suggestions on here about haggling are actually very good, and would fit very well. As such, I have now included this as rank 3 of Cap Collector on http://vault111.com. Let's see if it makes it into the final game!

Thank you to Ghoztz for posting this thread, as well as several others who have offered further input
