Impact of LUCK

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 7:46 am

Hi everyone

This is more of a question on how attributes and perks impact RNG. Here are two scenarios:

1. You have 1 in LUCK and no associated perks. You've just come out of the vault and raided your first dungeon, bandit settlement w/e.

2. You have 10 in LUCK and ALL the associated LUCK perks (in theory), which we at this point know increase further the chance of finding ammo, caps etc. You've just come out of the vault and raided your first dungeon, bandit settlement w/e.

If we presume that the 1. player came out with a small amount of caps and ammo, and possibly 1-2 pieces of layered leather and added say a Hunting Rifle to his arsenal - what can we assume that the 2. player can add to his loot table?

How big of a jump is there between these two scenarios, considering the the amount of loot nad the quality of loot the player gets?

ps. this is all in theory and just for discussion. I'm not advocating cheating etc.

I think Luck's effect on loot will be relegated solely to perks, honestly. Pick up Fortune Finder and Scrounger (and possibly additional ranks of each, or other Luck perks down the list) in order to improve your finds. Luck itself may only be used in calculating critical hits, and some specific checks. I have no idea.

And what worries ME is that the difference between the two scenarios may be so little as to be almost insignificant. Instead of 20 caps you leave with 80 caps. FOUR TIMES AS MUCH!!11!!! but it's still just eighty caps. And maybe you "luck" up and get a super powerful rare weapon drop..... but being random, ~maybe you don't~.... even with a 10 Luck. I just am not a fan of random chance, and certainly won't be investing a lot of points into it.

That would be good for me.

I always enjoyed this kind of game most when scrabbling round with not enough ammo or resources in the early stages.

So I was going to go for 1 in luck for this reason, but then I'd miss on the criticals perks. Hmmm.

This was always the one skill I would leave putting any points into during the SPECIAL book part of Fallout 3.

I don't believe in luck.

I'm really interested in how all the mechanics add up. Really tempted to play around with console commands before starting my first character. Bumping up attributes or adding perks, just to see the difference.

Otherwise I'll start the game, invest some some dusin of hours and regret my choices down the road. I'll just end up restarting the game. :)

Unable to comment on how much weight I will put into LUCK points until I have a better idea of how combat criticals work (in and out of VATS) and how LUCK effects them.

I would likely never take perks that increase chances to scavenge or getting more caps or ammo, but increasing critical chances in combat might be worth considering.

Luck didn't effect loot tables in Fallout 3 or FNV for that matter.

Not sure how many people other than myself invested in "Fortune Finder"

With that perk I ended up guess what finding a fortune and pretty much often found at least double if not four times as many caps in loot tables.

With "Ammo Scrounger"

Guess what I found 2X - 4X as much ammo in ammo crates.

With this perk I literally had a collection of rockets stacking up at my player home. I never had a want or need for an ammo bench.

Luck Perks in previous games were well worth using.

So to be clear, you have to have invested points into Luck stat to unlock the perks and then invest the points into those perks.

Yes its well worth the cost of investment.

Basically with those 2 perks, you have all the ammo and money your ever going to need.

Can just spray off bullets to watch the graphic effects cause just have soo many bullets laying around why not?

Can just spend caps on whatever you want cause finding the next loot cache is so easy.

I'm kind of torn on luck.

Through prayer skill or you always have more than enough money more than enough items more than enough ammo. Finding extra really won't be important to me.

I hope luck has some interesting perks to it.

Player skill and "time" sure your going to have enough eventually....But

The rare ammo is what makes "Ammo Scrounger" freakin amazing.

If it plays anything like Fallout 3 or NV, the loot both players gained will probably differ very little. Now the latter player who has all of the perks however, will likely get a tad bit more ammo and caps, but that's about it. I find Luck itself has never really had that much of an effect on loot when comparing a character will low Luck to a character with high Luck. As said already, it will be the perks that will make a real difference and the ranks that follow that may have a larger effect on loot.

Me personally, the primary reason to invest in Luck was always for improving crits. Investing in it for solely looting felt meaningless as, well, it changed little to nothing on what you got. The only thing that did change something were the perks aligned with the attribute, which only involved caps and ammo. And even then, the usefulness of both perks can be rather questionable. Of course, that is only talking about Luck and its perks in Fallout 3/NV.

Maybe player 1 comes out with a standard hunting rifle

Maybe player 2 comes out with a hunting rifle with a scope or a marksman's stock.

Luck literally doesn't affect loot at all on it's own in the prior games. Fortune Finder and Scrounger worked as scripts that added additional entries into several leveled lists.

Look it up in the Geck,

Player with Ammo Scrounger finds an ammo crate there is a 50/50 straight up chance that they will get an additional 100% more ammo out of that crate. We're not talking a little bit more ammo we are talking so much more ammo that your never going to need to purchase more ammo ever. The fact that the ammo in Fo3 and FNV also includes rare ammo like .44 or rockets makes it pretty awesome.

Scrounger Perk gives a ton of ammo and can be taken early in the game, if your playing a build that needs a lot of ammo or even rare ammo its an amazing perk. Heck if you love Big Guns its practically a mandatory perk if you detest having to go to town to purchase ammo.

Luck definitely felt like it helped a lot with gambling in NV. But we have no idea how much gambling will come into play in 4. There certainly don't seem to be any perks associated with it so far but it could be hidden in there somewhere. Luck has always been associated with critical hits/misses so I don't see any of that changing. Luck just kind of works in the background and that's what I like about it. You don't have any control over luck and it doesn't usually do anything that has major drawbacks or advantages.. It just makes you a bit luckier sometimes maybe...

I NEVER took those perks and never needed more ammo or caps. I guess they could have made life a bit easier at lower levels, but at a certain point, caps became more or less meaningless as I simply had more than I would ever need to spend. Now for some 'no vendor, iron man" game, I could see them being important, but not for normal game play.

I could imagine them making a higher-up perk, that increases the chance of you getting "rare" loot or multiple items fx. stimpacks. When you trigger a container it calculates your chance of getting a weapon and of what quality that weapon will be. I could live with that.

So if you're unlucky you get more damaged (considering durability is in the game in some form) weapons and you have to scrap them or sell them. A lucky player will find better weaponry of higher quality - which he then shoots for lower damage, cause he invested his perks in LUCK. I could totally see that logic. Don't know if I would go for LUCK, but I see a lot of people doing so, if that's the case.

Having LUCK only impact caps and ammo, is just boring. I imagine they incorporated more into it.
