Alternative Control Schemes, Including "Legacy"

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 1:09 pm

I apologize if this has been posted before, but I would love to see the inclusion of the legacy controls layout for first person perspective in Fallout 4; actually all of them would be nice-- default, legacy, southpaw, and legacy southpaw. I see no downside in including all of these, as it caters to pretty much every single gamer out there on gamepads. Thanks.

Hmmm, could you clarify what you mean? I'm pretty sure F4 will have the same control mapping as F3 and FNV with the addition of a dedicated grenade/mine and gun melee buttons - perhaps a few other new mappings. However, I'm sure the "core" mechanics will be mapped the same e.g. movement, aiming, firing, interacting, vats etc.

Legacy is a throwback thumbstick configuration where the left stick moves the character forward and backwards and looks left and right. The right stick strafes side to side and looks up and down. I know it can sound counter-intuitive to the uninitiated. It's an alternative stick configuration in many first person perspective games such as Halo, Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Borderlands. Called "legacy" I would assume because as the normal keyboard+mouse (left hand controls all movement, right hand controls aiming) was mapped to gamepads, that became "default". What we now call "legacy" was used in games like Goldeneye 64 and Perfect Dark. I and many others like me prefer legacy to default not just for precision aiming on gamepads but for general ambulation.

That does sound counter-intuitive. How is it more precise since it'd take both sticks (two thumbs) to basically do any simple movement that can be done with one thumb?.. like rotate your view in a circle or run around in a circle? I understand if it's a configuration you've always played with and thus are simply used to moving in a such a manner... but I don't see it actually being more precise in anyway.

Goldeneye 64 did that because there WAS only one thumbstick on the Nintendo 64 controller.

And, I have a similar view to vyvexthorne. I doubt it's in any way more precise.

All that aside, I hope they have the ability to alter gamepad layout for your sake, just because it's always nice to have more options for those who want it.

I didn't mean to suggest it's any more or less precise than any other layout. I just meant precision aiming generally as the action of looking straight at a specific point in space. Legacy users simply prefer to use both sticks to accomplish this. As I said, to the uninitiated it probably sounds weird. Try as I might, the default setting to me is equally bizarre. In the end, all we're asking for is the option. The biggest names in console shooters offer it. I wish it was standard to every game that offers first person perspective, because, like I said, I prefer it not just for shooting but for passive ambulation as well.

"passive ambulation". I will have to figure out some way to work this into my daily discourse.

I consider my vocabulary to be rather good and I have no idea what it means.

You'll find a mini-rebellion on the pages of the Battlefront forums right now. People so disheartened that legacy was not offered in the beta, and this from one of the few developers who regularly actually does include it in their games. Fallout never has, but there are more than a few people out there who just won't get into the series because first person legacy isn't an option. It svcks. It would be one thing to ask the developer to--I don't know--...create a whole new layout just for me from scratch because applying downward pressure on the thumbstick gives me seizures or something. No, legacy controls are a pretty common option in the menus of rather huge titles. Get on board, Bethesda.

I have purchased the Xbox Elite Controller which is coming out 2 weeks before the game. If you're worried about the controls and button mapping, maybe you should consider it since you can map the buttons to anywhere you would like.

I had an exchange with Xbox support on this very topic already. The Xbox controller remapping app (which will be available for all controllers, not just the Elite) will only allow button remapping, sensitivity tweaking, and thumbstick swapping. Swapping thumbsticks, or "Southpaw", is readily available in a lot of games. But importing a legacy stick configuration to games that don't offer it natively will not be a feature. So they said. How something like that is not a system-level feature already is beyond me. I hope they add that ability.

Meh I'm fine with left stick moves me around, and right stick moves the camera.
