Japan version playable in English?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 10:21 am

Question 1:

I live in Japan but I want to play Fallout 4 in English. Can I do this if I purchase the digital edition on Steam?

Bethesda's release info mentions that the Japanese version supports Japanese voice/text, but says nothing about English, so it falls short of answering my question.

Question 2:

Will the Japanese version have content removed like with Fallout 3?

I apologise if this has been asked before, but the search function on this forum is completely broken.

You'll have better luck finding out if you PM Gstaff directly.

1. I'm pretty sure Steam lets you switch out languages no problem in the game's properties - it'll just have to queue up a download for the new files. I can do it with Skyrim and Fallout 3 (and I think every other Bethesda game), so it would be weird if that pattern didn't continue with Fallout 4.

2. No idea.

From the http://bethesda.net/#en/events/game/prepare-for-the-future-fallout-4-important-release-info/2015/10/08/35 at Bethesda.net, it doesn't sound like the Japanese version supports English. Every other region in the world is listed as supporting English as well as other languages.

Here's the bit about language support:

What languages does Fallout 4 support?

  • In North America, Fallout 4 supports English/French voice/text.
  • In South America, Fallout 4 supports English voice/text, as well as BR-PT and Latin American Spanish text.
  • In the United Kingdom and Australia/New Zealand, Fallout 4 supports English voice/text only.
  • In most European territories, Fallout 4 supports English/French/Italian/German/Spanish voice/text
  • In Russia and Poland, Fallout 4 supports English voice/text and Polish/Russian text.
  • In Asia, Fallout 4 supports English voice/text and English voice / Traditional Chinese text.
  • In Japan, Fallout 4 supports Japanese voice/text.

It seems like the Japanese version is different from the rest, and is probably the only version you'll have access to in Japan.

Reminds me of when people don't realize that it is a bad idea to stick their hand into a wood chipper.

If that's the case, then it's bloody stupid that the option's not even there. I've messaged Gstaff about this. Hopefully I can get a straight answer.

As of early last month no version of Fallout 4 had been censored. That could change, but it's getting closer to release and no censoring has been announced for any release as far as I know. I don't remember hearing anything about the Japanese version of New Vegas being censored, so if that didn't have anything removed I doubt this will either.

It's been a while, but somehow or other on my Steam settings, I was able to do the opposite, as I changed Skyrim's audio to Japanese.

That was pretty awesome, the bard songs were so cool! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WjrmjhnLkQ

Try this:

Spoiler

Changing the language of individual games

The language of many games can be changed independently from the Steam client language.

  1. Log into your Steam account
  2. Right click on a game from the Steam game library and choose Properties.
  3. Go to the Language tab
  4. Select the language you wish to use from the drop-down menu
  5. Click OK
  6. If the game supports the language you have selected, files for that language may need to be downloaded before you can play.

This is what it looks like when I select this option for Skyrim: http://i.imgur.com/OT9nymR.jpg

If that doesn't work, maybe try changing the language of your Steam client to English, if it is not already

Spoiler

Changing the language of the Steam client

The Steam language setting determines which language the Steam client application displays, as well as the language which games are presented in. (Third-party titles may have their own language settings - these settings will generally be independent of the Steam language setting)

  1. Log into your Steam account
  2. Click the Steam menu in the top menu bar (this is the first option on the left at the top of the window)
  3. Go to the Settings option
  4. Go to the Interface tab
  5. Select the language you wish to use from the drop-down menu
  6. Click OK and then select the option to Restart Steam
  7. Once Steam restarts, you will be able to use Steam and Valve games in the language which you selected.
  8. If you have games installed that support the language you have selected, files for that language may need to be downloaded before you can play.

Not sure where you got that info, but they DID release a statement that the JPN version would be delayed about a month, so they are changing something (or the localization is just that more difficult).

Your 2nd comment is more cryptic than your first so I hesitate to ask what Fargo has to do with your answer and what a wood chipper has to do with JPN game questions. If just trolling....GG.

I'll chalk it up to you trying to sound witty, but you couldn't quite get there.

Seen Fargo. Remember the scene. Have no idea how it's relevant. Better luck next time, bud.

Thank you for this. This is helpful, and it should come in handy. In a worst case scenario, there's always Steam Refunds.

The fact I have to wait about 5 weeks after most countries doesn't bother me all too much.
You just KNOW there'll be bugs aplenty for a game this size. 5 weeks is enough time for Bethesda to release an 8gig bugfixing patch.

When I do this I also have the option to select Traditional Chinese. I don't find Chinese in your screenshot, is it cut off or are you really not able to select Chinese? I always thought that steam allows everyone to select every language, but I seem to be wrong.

Interesting, yep in my case there is no Traditional Chinese option in the Skyrim language settings. I imagine that would be just subtitles, as I'm fairly certain there is no Mandarin dub.

Ok, that confirms that not all languages are selectable for all people. I think that maybe a Bethesda or Steam staff member accidentally forgot to tick a checkbox for non European version (mine is a European version), but still this may be worrysome for some people.
