Could this be the last fallout game?

That highlights an intriguing point, can Bethesda allow the series to lay dormant for possibly 7 or more years?

I'm not sure if Obsidian would be willing to make another game under similar conditions as that of New Vegas, but Bethesda has to find an alternative studio to fulfill the same role.

A quiescence of that duration could be especially deleterious to the mindshare Fallout currently sports, the next Bethesda Fallout game could possibly release on the next generation of consoles.

I really don't understand why Bethesda doesn't try to buy Obsidian, they would be adroit at providing commercially and critically successful stopgaps in the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series; offering a somewhat regular cadence between releases.

well but Bethesda keep the hipe with ES series too, i remember the forums of Skyrim with ppl that like Fallout, saying how crazy will be to make fallout wiht the stuff skyrim improve...

Plus u right they maybe make another spin-off (call it spin-off bc no number on it) like New Vegas between now and the new Fallout game.

For me at least will be more like waiting for the next ES.

LoL probably Fallout, ES and ME are the 3 biggest game i want to keep coming out.

Possibly because Obsidian doesn't want to be bought, and even if they did, theres no way Beth would let anyone touch the single player TES games since that their pet series.

True, and it poses an interesting quandary for Bethesda.

As even the most proud owners of pets would rather someone watch over their pets than no one.Considering the financial imperative of releasing a TES/Fallout games every 3-4 they maybe should considering sharing custody of their favorite pet.

I doubt Bethesda will or would ever consider such a notion but they did consider it with Fallout which probably wasn't an easy decision for them to make.

New Vegas, as much as I dearly love it, really suffers from the whole idea of its development being "Throw some Fallout out there to satisfy demand!"

If we do get another title similar to it it could really use a extra year or two of development time, if only to round everything out since it lacks in some places where its rushed development becomes obvious. If New Vegas had released in 2011 or 2012 we could probably have had a real ending that has lasting effects shown on the world, rather than being told the effects. We could also have been able to travel in the lands of the Legion, seeing much more than Fortification Hill and the military structure of the Legion and giving them a bit more development to make them seem less like savages when we see the civilian lands.

Both of those things were things Obsidian wanted to do, but were cut for lack of time, and that's a giant shame. The business people in Zenimax or Bethesda Softworks or whoever controls the financial side of the business have basically given Todd and co. free reign over the game after the runaway success of Skyrim. With Fallout 4 poised to make even more money I think the business side wouldnt bleed through as much as it did for New Vegas, and these things might be possible given a second chance.

I don't think that having major gaps between Fallout/TES games hurts the brands. Skyrim was perfectly successful, and Fallout 4 is shaping up that way too. The next game in any series should come out when you're sick of playing the last one. That point comes far later for Bethesda games than your average developer. I started a fresh Fallout 3 character just last week, so their timing is pretty okay.

Every other post I've seen out of him has been trolling, I doubt this one is any different. Honestly though I'd be morbidly curious to see how other developers would handle Fallout and see how they compare. Certainly not at the expense of a Bethesda Fallout though, or even Obsidian.

It was a pretty long time in between Oblivion and Skyrim, and its looking to be even longer between Skyrim and TES VI. People have gotten used to waiting a long time on Bethesda's games, since they know they are going to get quality every time.

I have to wonder if part of Bethesda's success has been the failings of other AAA developers with the whole micro transaction and DLC-laden stuff that's possible with the technology now. In the past 10 years ive seen a whole bundle of games try to churn as much money out of players as technology will allow, and to me it seems that Bethesda tried it exactly once with Oblivion and never decided to go down that road again. We've got single player games where you can spend real money on in-game currency now. I have to think that's driving some players away from the big giants of the industry and into the arms of others.

Technological improvement hasn't been all bad though, the potential for a game has only gotten better, just so has the means for business suits to extract as much money from people as they can.

I can see Bethesda doing that with Fallout without much issue. The lore isn't quite as complicated as what we see in TES. With that game, one gameplay mechanic, one boss that shouldn't be alive, etc. holds massive implications for the series. Beyond that, Bethesda seems to want to get as much as possible out of each province, which would likely relegate other developers to provinces we've already seen.

Fallout doesn't suffer from that as much, as it uses real world anologues. Rather than entire states, we work with cities. There are more locations that the team can choose from.

I am hoping obsidian has another go at it after in the very least. I have a feeling that they will get this chance.

I'm only surprised more Fallout x's don't come out sooner. The only thing that would delay or end for a protracted period any release would be a buyout where personnel are greatly affected, or the ever possible legal realm.

Yes.

But only when Bethesda's money bin makes the one Scrooge McDuck owns look like a piggy bank by comparison.

I think there is also the problem of the fact that TES, unlike Fallout, isn't a post apocalyptic world, where theres no real communication with the other side of the continent. Tamriel is ruled by an empire, or by Skyrim's case, two empires, and whats going on in Hammerfell isn't exactly unknown to the people of Morrowind.

On top of that, each game has directly been the cause of the next

-Jagar Tharn impersonating the emperor, and letting The Empire fall to [censored], in Arena is what caused the political situation of Daggerfall.

-The destruction of the Numidium in Daggerfall led to Dagoth-Ur needing to construct the Akulakan in Morrowind.

-The Nerevarine freeing the heart of Lorkhan in Morrowind is what weakened the barrier to allow Mehrunes Dagon to invade in Oblivion

-Martin Septim sacrificing himself to stop Mehrunes Dagon is what led to the entire political situation in Skyrim, both of which were the last two pieces needed for Alduin to return.

TES is one singular meta-plot, in a continent where news from side is easily available to those on the other. There really isn't any room for something ELSE, aka an Obsidian made game, to be going on in all this.

Fallout is different, since its neither one super-plot, nor are means communication readily available. Bethesda can sit on their east coast, and Obsidian can camp on their west coast, and outside of a few small name drops/references, they can go about their day without ever coming into contact with each other.

And, as I have pointed out in other threads, Bethesda appears to have actively tried to make their east coast not mess with the lore of the west or Midwest, even going so far as to have Ashur not move into the major cities of the rust belt, such as Cincinnati and Detroit, even though they are just as close, if not closer, then D.C. and Ronto are, just so they could avoid the MWBoS.

I doubt letting Obsidian make a Fallout game was a hard decision for them. Bethesda seems perfectly willing to admit that that stuff over in the west and Midwest really isn't "theirs", even though they own the series, since it was made by another company, and seem perfectly fine with letting the people from that company make another game in the area they created, while they sit on their east coast.
