CD-rom required for install?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 2:04 pm

I pre-ordered Fallout 4 (Pip Boy Edition) for the PC and I do not have a cd-rom drive on my PC.
Will I be able to download the full copy? I do not want to buy a cd-rom just to do an install of fallout 4.
thanks

Don't worry, the physical edition of Fallout 4 won't come with a CD-ROM.

It will, however, come with a DVD.

From what I understand, you can install off the disc if you have a drive, to save download bandwidth, but I believe your Steam key will be in the package and you'll be able to just use that and not use the disc at all, if you don't have a disc drive.

To be technical, since it's a DVD and not a CD it would be a DVD drive, but I don't think it would be required. The game should come with the Steam key which will add it to your Steam library and you can then choose to install some, download the rest or download all of it. For example, I can install Skyrim again straight from the disc but I usually just download it via Steam.

You mean DVD-ROM.

AAA video game publishing companies and AAA video game development companies stopped using CD discs since like 2005? 2006? The PC version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is on a DVD disc when I purchased it in 2006.

The physical boxed version of the PC version of Fallout 4 will be on a DVD disc with a Steam key.

Steam is required, absolutely. That hasn't changed since Skyrim and I don't see it changing in the future.

I actually just read an article about this earlier today. You can download the entire game on Steam, or you can buy the physical disc, but either way, you still need to use a Steam key. They say it's to fight piracy, so you download most of the game from the physical disc, and then the rest off of Steam.

Then if it's already been confirmed on a whole host of sources that it's a Steam-only game, it also being Steamworks is irrelevant. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/01/29/valve-release-steamworks/ It is a suite of development and publishing tools - this is a separate concept from being a game that requires Steam to play; Steamworks is just tools made by Valve but it is incorrectly used by some people to mean it's a game on Steam...just setting the record straight.

No worries, you don't need to buy an optical drive.

Depending on where you ordered it from, you might receive a Steam key via email prior to launch. Otherwise, you will need to open the box to get your key and download it from Steam.
