Curious about melee with guns?

First off, long time lurker this is my first post :) Played through every fallout game and loved them all. Even NV.

I'm curious as to what will affect the amount of damage you do when you melee bash someone with a gun? I don't plan on using it often if at all unless someone gets close and I don't have a melee weapon to switch too or my shotgun is empty.

What do you guys think?

I suspect it's just affected by your strength, maaaybe that perk lower down on the strength with the pip boy holding a rifle boosts it.

Beyond that we know rifle stocks and bayonets boosts melee dmg.

Man If we can put a bayonette on a shotgun I can think of some super fun hybrid builds

I would be very surprised we couldn't, heck if rl armies can have shotguns with bayonets, why not Fallout 4?

So I wonder what happens when you hit the dedicated melee button when you are using a melee weapon. The triggers will swing the weapon normally I'd imagine but what about the melee button they are going to incorporate for the guns? It doesn't just go away when you are using a melee weapon.

Power attack, block would be the aim button for melee weapons. What I want to know is in the case of guns can we switch the melee to an alternate fire mode, like a 30mm grenade launcher under an AR or a shotgun barrel under a pistol?
