Pre-Purchased CD-ROM Verison, Steam Key Also?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 5:24 am

Hey everyone, I was very curious if anyone has heard anything about this as I've pre-ordered other games such as CoD on PC (CD) which came with Steam keys.

I just went to Gamestop and pre-purchased Fallout 4 due to me having a lot of in-store credit that I needed to burn. I'm curious, since I ordered a CD version of the game for PC will I also receive a Steam key in the box so I can redeem it in my library? I wanted to get a CD version to save data since I'm limited on a datacap thanks to Comcast.

I appreciate any helpful information regarding this.

You should becuse it's using steam as antipiracy measure and plus you have to download additinal data to make your game playable.

So you need internet in the first install.

I'm hoping so! I just was not sure if they were doing another platform or something else as I don't order CD's often. I figured there'd be a day 1 patch so as well (finger crossed for Steam)

Thanks for the response!

What you use to activate a product on Steam is the authorization code (usually found these days on the back of the game manual.) Once you have the physical copy you can enter that code and it will activate on Steam.

For those who may not know - you can even do this for products you didn't purchase directly off Steam. For example, when I do get a physical copy of a game, I'll usually just activate it off Steam and download direct from them. It's been at least half a dozen years since I've actually used my PC's disk drive.

Edit: Due to the above, I'm not entirely 100% on the process for activating a product you want to (partially, in the case of Fallout 4) install off disk. I'm assuming that you insert the disk and then at the proper time you'll be prompted to activate it on Steam. I do know that if you activate a product on Steam ahead of time, it'll likely try to download and install the entire thing from their servers, so as a heads'-up I'd recommend waiting until the install prompts you to do so.
