Will settlements be a chore? (possible Spoilers)

***Spoilers***

So looking at some of the info surfacing, it seems like settlements will require a fair bit of upkeep from the player, at least to start, i'm assuming food and the like will need to be replenished, but im gonna go out on a limb and say you can make it self sufficient with time.

My question is with needing to protect your settlements, info has come up saying you will be warned when they are in danger and therein lies my concern, If I want to say build just a small trading hub for my own amusemant / use am I going to be constantly bothered by needing to go back every time to keep the fair people on Megaton 2.0 from dying out to whatever radiated abominations want to feats upon their delicious squishy bits?

I'm wondering if there will there be steep penalties for avoiding an attack, or if you can make your settlement able to defend itself.

Any thoughts / opinions, or even confirmed info on whether I can create a mount doom fortress of flamethrowers and death capable of taking care of itself, or whether settlements will become the Roman Bellic of fallout and constantly badger me to go bowling.

I don't mind keeping my character busy, busier the better, gives me a sense of purpose. I think you'll spend a fair amount of time building & getting creative with your settlements. Looking forward to seeing what the modder's do with this new workshop system.

Just put up defenses/hire guards/ build robots ect to protect it when your not able to.. and hire one of your companions to run it while your away (you need to level up local leader perk to be able to set a companion other than dogmeat as someone in charge of a settlement)

If you really want just put up defenses and hire one of your companions to run the settlement for you.

Although.. it would be interesting if dogmeat could run a settlement... "your orders sir!?" "woof woof woof" "umm... what genius decided to put a dog in charge!"

You mean you can't do the time-honored tradition of having your dog in a position of authority?

Well I hope they made it fun. I am not really into the build you own home thing but if I can't find a safe place to live and display my collection of loot I guess I will have to figure it out.

I want to make two settlements relatively close to each other but have them as rivals. Ill play both sides of the chess board as the puppet master. Dance puppets, dance!
