Fallout 4 PC Retail Steam Download

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 7:34 am

I don't know if anybody will know just yet, and I've had a look but couldn't find anything, but does anybody know what the download size will be for the Retail Copy of Fallout 4 since the whole game isn't going to be fully on the discs? It's just because I have crappy internet and I just want to jump into the action quickly. Thank you :)

Don't take this as gospel quite yet since I don't have exact numbers, but if the game on consoles is 28.1 GBs and the disc can hold up to 4.7 GBs of data, I'd guess the remaining download size could be about 23.4 gigs or more. And if you had purchased a digital key instead of a physical copy, preloading it on Steam is quite possible.

A single-layer DVD hold 4.7GB, yeah. However, dual-layer DVDs pretty much been the norm since the DVDs arrived in the late 90s, so it's really about 9GB. And if the game is shipped on 3 DVDs (which wouldn't be out of the question considering the PC version of Wolfenstein: New Order that Bethesda published last year was shipped on 4 DVDs), then we are up to about 27GB. So only 1GB needs to be downloaded.

It's all just guesses though, the amount we need to download could be anything, we just don't know yet.

it doesn't count for the compression they've used as well so it's not clear how much will be downloaded.

On PS4 the full game install is 32Gigs "apparently" to give you a reference.

The download size for those with a physical pc copy could be quite different.
I really wish Bethesda would clarify this. There are many players around the world with poor internet, and download caps.
Knowing the actual download size for sure, would at least allow people to plan ahead. Buy some add-on GB etc.
You know there are some isp's with huge penalties if you unknowingly go over your monthly plan. Like 2c per MB.
Which would equate to $200 penalty for 10GB. Whereas if we knew the download size they could pre-buy an add on 10GB for only $15.
I really don't know why Bethesda would not release this important information.
But if they do not, Please any early pc downloaders post the download size here on the forum.

The size of the Steam download is almost certainly going to be the full 28.1 GBs that the consoles downloaded, or very similar to that. The DVD is only going to hold an installer for Steam, no actual game data.

Don't spread misinformation. They've confirmed that the DVD will hold some game data, but we know from unboxing videos that there is only one DVD in the box. The installed size is around 28 GB, but Steam compression is quite efficient, so the full download might be 16-20 GB. If they've used a double layer DVD and reasonable compression on the disc, it could contain half of the game data. From that, we can guess that disc-based installs might have to download somewhere between 7 and 16 GB.

No need to correct me on that, Pete Hines has confirmed that the pc dvd will contain 4.7 GBs of data.

Yeah, there are a few on YouTube. I watched several before I finally saw one guy take the DVD out of the box, and there was only one disc. It was a German one, PIP-boy edition, you can see what platform it's for on the plastic wrap around the case.

Edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_p2jXg_uESc, he takes the DVD out of the case at around 4:05.

Oh wow, thats bad. Hines and company are rather delusional in regards to piracy. Because its the steam pre loads that will hit the torrent sites, then the pirates will get the remainder of the game on release and shortly after, the crack. But yeah, having physical buyers DL and additional 75% or more of the game will slow piracy...sure lol.

He confirmed that a DVD will hold 4.7 GB of data (duh). He did not say it contained 4.7 GB of Fallout data. Likely mostly empty space.

We will know soon enough.

So basically all signs are pointing to another MGS V incident though a bit better because we will have at least 4-9 gb on the disc? Can only assume Hines is staying mute to not hinder any potential sales.

Actually, unless there's another quote that I missed, Pete didn't say anything about the capacity of a DVD. That was stated by the writer of an article (on PC Gamer, I think) along with Pete's quote about PC games using DVDs instead of Blu-rays. It has been mis-attributed to Pete by people who read that article rather than the actual tweet that was being quoted.

They could have used a higher capacity dual-layer disc, but the fact remains that some portion of the data will have to be downloaded. We just don't know how much, and probably won't until next week.
