I would say a lot of it is the scheduling with stores, the manpower involved in shipping, the diistribution, the manufacturing of the console disks, Steam making sure that it's servers are at top peak on opening day, Gamestop scheduling to be open on the evening of the 9th, and so on. I can only imagine the logistics involved in this.
It's a big chain of events involving a lot people and resources. I'm not even sure that if Bethesda wanted to release it today they could, even on a digital basis.
And that's not even including business contracts and so on.
Back in the day, kids would be out playing football or soccer with their friends, not waiting for game releases. Well back then we also had the Atari 2600 and Commodore 64.
Why not wait? It's only a few more days.. Play some fallout or NV or something else while you wait.
