Come to think of it... I haven't seen any footage of weapons actually being on your/NPC's back or hip. At the end of the Big Leagues perk video NPC's just pull weapons out of nowhere, so it's not looking very hopeful...

I think this is my first real gripe with the game if true. I loved seeing my equipped weapon on my character when I was checkin them out.
