From the leaked gameplay that I've seen, the new combat makes me think of the Borderlands games. They seem to have the same kind of fluid(?) feel. If the combat feels similar, I'm super excited since I loved the BL games. Anyone agree?

Yeah plays out much more like a FPS now. One could argue that it is too much shooter and not enough RPG now, though. However I think it is a decent step, when you think how horrible the shooter game in fallout 3 was.
Pretty sure Bethesda took some things from Gearbox's Borderlands series, such as the 'slap the affix on every bad guy and darken the coloration so they'll be uber scawy' trick. I wouldn't say fluid, as the enemies are still derpy (Raider walking of rooftops, facetanking lead, etc.), and let's not forget the Deathclaw's derpy moment, I'm sure a lot of people are gonna have fun with that exploit.
Yep, I agree. I loved the fluid feel of gunplay in BL2 - put in about 2700 hours into it.
As long as FO4 still feels like a Fallout game in other areas, gunplay improvement is very welcome.

I just hope I'll still be able to play without getting out of VATS, but my hopes are low now that VATS seems to have been nerfed to death.
Uh, pretty sure VATS got a huge buff, the only small nerf was that enemies are now in uber-slow mo.
Mmm... BL is faster paced though. At least that's what it looks like. FO4 it looks more shooter-y now (better gun behavior and mechanics) but I wouldn't compare it to BL to be honest.
Nope sorry, never played Gears of War. But yeah stuff like this happens.
On topic: You are right it is still an RPG at heart, but the streamlining or tendency of content towards a more action experience is there. And yeah the legendary mobs are really like Borderlands or Diablo bosses. I do not really like this system. I rather want named mobs, that do not need to be much stronger but have story to tell and are less generic.
Edit: Concerning VATS: From what I see it is far from needed. With spread basically gone you are rather gimping yourself with VATS, if you are a good shot. If you can hit the head succesively with any weapon, why would you use VATS where you only have a chance to hit the enemy?
Not the only nerf:
-There don't seems to be criticals outside of critical bar while in VATS.
-Grim Reaper Sprint activate 15% of the time.
-Slow Motion instead of time stop makes you unable to have some tries before actually using your points.
actually, criticals function outside of VATS as well, it's just VATS has this...'critical bar' that you can use nilly-willy (even an entire perk slot is focused on it).
Cause I'm bad at shooters and find them boring.
and there's perks that give benefits to the critical bar, also, bad at shooters...find them boring, yet you're playing Fallout. So what, you're going melee I presume?
I'm not using this "outside of VATS", cause it bores me to death.
Not that it have to bores others people, but I find it boring (and hard).
And before in Vats I had about one critical per shot, and I have a big doubt I'll have that ratio with the critical bar.
And even If I did, then it means I'll have to:
-Go in Vats.
-Shoot without critical.
-Close Vats (so my bar will be refilled for my next shot).
-Open Vats.
-Shoot with critical.
-Shoot without critical.
-Close VATS.
-Etc...
there's perks that focus on the very critical bar, you know, seeing as Bethesda loves VATS. If you want criticals so much in VATS, then take the perks.
Actually I never had to shoot outside of VATS in Fallout 3...
Isn't that what VATS was meant to be: an alternative way of playing for old RPG players which like Fallout?
Yeah I was actually backing you up with my post. From what I see VATS is underused and maybe irrelevant.
On the other hand VATS in 3 and NV was really overpowered in the end, especially with Grim Reaper's sprint. Still it might be really usable if you skill yourself accordingly. Action Boy, Grim Reaper's Sprint, Concentrated Fire, Gun Fu, and a high luck to get you r crit meter up. IT will take a lot of time to become as viable as being an accurate shot though.
there are some really nice perks in the luck, agility and perception trees that should make Vats super powerful.
Far from what it used to be as most perks will be used to do what you naturally were doing before in VATS plus the strongest VATS perk is 15% of what it used to be.
All I know so far is that those players playing in the leaked videos don't play anything like I do. Is that how most people play these games?. It looks so sporadic. . Watching me play would probably be pretty boring.. just some dude crouched behind something trying to find a pattern in enemy movements for 10 minutes .
