Do I have to spend points when I level up?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 10:56 am

Just curious each time we level up, do we have to spend our points immediately? Can anyone confirm if we can save up points? Sometimes when I level up I don't know where I want to put them until I run into a scenario like I find a locked box that I don't have the skill for, therefor I then use my saved skill points to dump into locksmithing so I can get into that box..

I believe you can save the points. Leaked gameplay kind of showed the PC in a tough situation and the player went into the perk chart and got a gun perk.

I would assume you could bank them...but you know what they say about assuming hahahah. I can't imagine they would make you spend them before leaving the level up screen. It would be a first in the FO universe.

I sure hope so, because I was thinking of just that situation when I was planning my build... of course the level-gating on higher ranks of perks will do some of that limiting for me, but, yah, I'd like to hold a perk in reserve so that if I find a computer, I can put it in Hack... if I find a lock, I can put it in Locpick... if I find an NPC to talk to, I can put it into Lady Killer / Black Widow, etc...

I also hope (and expect) that we can look at the ENTIRE perk list ~whenever~ we want. As I recall, in previous games you only saw the entire perk list when you were at the level-up screen, and thankfully you could see ALL the perks, even those for which you did not yet qualify. Problem is, unless you write them down or something, it's easy to forget, like, how high does my STR have to be to get that perk I was looking at? And what level do I have to be?

Wha? Pretty sure you HAD to spend all your skill points AND select a perk before leaving the FO3 level up dialogs. I'll check today, but I don't think there is any way to continue without doing so.

You can hold onto points as long as you like. This'll help if you're close to meeting a level requirement on multiple perks and want to save a few points to buy 'em all at once.

You know...you maybe right...It's been a while. Chances are I'm talking out my butt. Been playing the aforementioned WL2 if honor of FO:4 arriving. Probably mixing the two together.

You can save them. This was confirmed, and not just in a leak (which I wouldn't watch). The character system video on Bethesda.net clearly has an indication that the player has 1 available perk to spend. So it follows in the footsteps of Skyrim.

Not sure if you need to have at least one point to spend but you can look at the perk chart. Leaked gameplay shows him opening it, closing it, opening it, choosing a perk, and closing it

Just don't level up. It's not like there's separate perks and skill points anymore, so just save a level. I don't recall playing any games that have ever forced you to level up.

Again....FO3 automatically forces you into a level up screen when you hit XP amount (and are no longer in combat or busy otherwise). As I recall, there is no way to exit the screen without spending all the available skill points and then selecting a perk from the next screen.

That being said, this in no way means FO4 will be in any way similar....but FO3 DID force you to level up.

^this

3/NV absolutely made you spend your points/pick a perk when leveling up. Couldn't get out of it if you wanted to

You had to, not so in skyrim however here perks had skill requirements who could easy generate problems, as in you was a bit away from skill requirements and close to level up. No I can not pick locks that would level me up and I need bow to 75 first.

I god'd a couple NV playthroughs just to mess with mods. 100+ levels and perks at every one. Once you hit 100 on all perks you actually could skip adding points and go right to the perk screen
