Is power armor too powerful?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 11:42 pm

I have just finished the main plot/quest and I have some thoughts about power armor. Don't you think that it is too powerful? I mean, is there any reason to explore Wasteland without it? When wearing it you are almost bullet proof, safe from radiation, can't drown, etc. Finding fusion cores is easy, I never ran out of them. What's your opinion?

It's all just optional. If you want to be a walking tank and easily go through the game, it's there. I haven't touched combat with PA since the initial Concord mission. Only thing I've done is grab a suit when I find it and bring it to my base. If I find a real reason to use it I will but I haven't yet

The power armor is just a little hobby of mine, and subsequently, the character I roleplay as.

I use it when I go on expeditions into the glowing sea though

I think Power Armor is pretty damn good, your a walking tank but, you need cores to operate the armor so, it makes sense to me.

My issue is that all other armor is TERRIBAD compared to power armor. their is just no comparison and thats NOT how it was in Fallout 1, 2, 3, & NV. As an example, Combat-Armor used to be really bad ass and not easy to come by ( not super hard or anything but, still). Now, Combat Armor is a shell of it's former self and so is almost every armor type save Power Armor.

Thats my issue.

so very wrong. Power armor made you basically invincible in Fallout 1 & 2.

I wouldn't say it is overpowered, there are still plenty of enemies far away from the north east that still do high damage to me despite all the additional defense i gain from it(i'm 48 right now)

I like how it is in this game,i do think the cores should be rarer though.

I'm not disagreeing with the idea that Power Armor was Bad-Ass in F1 & F2. What i'm saying the armor rating Gap between Power Vs. Combat Armor or almost any armor in the game has never been so far apart as it is now.

I've been sparing with it because of a lack of cores. If I wandered in it all the time I would be out of cores by now but I do have a stockpile of about 30 at level 25 so I'm sure i could use it more at least for missions or once i get to a large building. I hate to get to the end of the game with dozens of cores, 150 stimpacks (which i do have), a pile of jet and tens of thousands of credits. I was just thinking It gives you over 5x the armor of the heavy combat armor but it doesn't give you any attack bonuses unless you're melee.

I think the Fusion Core system currently in the game kind of svcks, because obviously the intention of fusion cores and armor damage was to make power armor extremely strong, but also give it a downside that makes you not want to use it all the time. That doesn't really happen right now though. The armor damage just carves into your town building since steel is a major component of damn near everything, and the fusion cores aren't really an interesting mechanic for power management, they are just batteries you have to constantly collect. They also just don't really provide a satisfying answer to "What is the limitation of power armor?" because you don't actually have to do anything specific to earn the continuous use of your power armor, you find the cores no matter how you proceed through the game.

I would really prefer it if they gave you more options for how to power the armor that make a more critical impact on how you play. For example, having the ability to build tesla towers at your towns that provide wireless power in a radius like artillery provides access to barrages. Or having a heat buildup mechanic where your suit slowly overheats when you run and jump and jetpack and you have to balance your movement with rest periods to give it time to cool down again. Maybe you could have the ability to recharge the suit at generators. Overall there are tons of ways in which they could have made managing the suit more interesting and engaging than simply slapping a timer on how long you have to pick up another core that is relatively easy to stay ahead of.

Overall I really love how they made power armor feel like it really is incredibly powerful but high maintenance, I just wish they had made the downside to power armor a little more something that you feel as you're using it, like overheating or not being able to fit into certain places, instead of simply having a consumable item that affords you X amount of uptime.

At lower difficulties its overpowered yes but bump the game difficulty to hard or higher and its a lot less so. Then leg and arm plates get destroyed very quickly when facing off against multiple enemies, then throw in a legendary NPC and its about right.

In lower difficulties, power armor is like being a Space Marine. On higher difficulties, it's closer to mandatory.

Thing is, unless you've upgraded it out the wazoo, explosive weaponry tends to shred it even on lower difficulties, and a power armor suit without armor pieces is essentially dead weight.

I would use it if I could. Damn unarmed incompatibility. PA is insanely OP.

It's like the old Skyrim exploit with alchemy/smithing/enchant cycling to create 2,000 armor rating, only this game gives you it for free and early rather than going out of your way and cheating. Rofl.

Try fight legendary sentry bot in power armor. They still rip you apart

Or go into a battle against 1 behemoth and a big group of super mutant with at least two legendary. I don't know how to survival those battle in survival mode without PA

I don't think it is too powerful, it's just too easy to maintain. If fusion cores were more scarce and it took more/rarer materials to repair then I think it would be pretty well balanced. As it stands I have only used mine twice, but I could use it all the time, if I so chose.

There will be mods, even (eventually) on consoles.

It's optional, for one. It's also not great for stealth gameplay. You can get the aquaboy/aquagirl perk to avoid drowning and be save from radiation in the water. Fusion cores need to be plentiful enough otherwise no one would ever use power armor. I think it's fine. Consider it an extra layer of armor that can be destroyed. If you think it makes the game too easy, scale up the difficulty or leave it at your settlement.

Also, enemies that poison go straight through PA, rendering it useless. I had more trouble fighting poisonous bloodbugs than I did deathclaws.
