[req] rain object

Post » Mon Jun 14, 2010 1:55 pm

Hi. 1st off, I'm requesting this based on knowledge on how the rain works, but perhaps this is impossible, I don't know.

Basically, I need next. There is going to be a region that has a constant rain. When inside certain building there will be windows, but I don't want the rain to fall around coming from the ceiling, logically, and yet I want it to be seen outside the windows. Now I know that rain is not really 3D but only like a veil or a layer over the screen, so is it possible to make an object of a transparent mesh on which the falling rain will be shown?

Thank you in advance.

Not sure what you are saying, but are you aware of the code patch fix for rain collision:
Rain/snow collision
Makes rain and snow stop falling through static objects, allowing you to take shelter under buildings and trees. Increases CPU load during these weather conditions; there will be a small performance hit, less if you have a fast processor. Please note this patch doesn't affect ash storms or blizzards, as the weather particles become too big to collide effectively.

There are two methods you could use for this:
- Create a plane and give it an animated (scrolling) rain texture, which you would then see looking out the window.
- Create a particle emitter, hang it over the house and add a deflector in Max, which would then create particles that would fall everywhere but on the house. I don't remember how you get deflectors working with MW, but IIRC they do function so you could make the rain bounce/fall from the roof and it may even look realistic.

IIRC there already is a mod or patch out, that fixes rain falling through roof tops. Rain indeed is just a 3D mesh, you could alter it and literarily let rain cats and dogs if you wanted to!!! ;)

Nah, I need it for environmental decoration, it's for a mod, not to patch my own game up.

If I could do it myself I wouldn't make a req thread, so unfortunately I even understand your 1st advice but that is waaay beyond my skills. Thanks for advices anyway.

the rain is a mesh its self, you could just put it in to the construction set and place it just above the window so that it rains down in front of the window, however if you make the cell rain through the normal weather system and put in your readme that the "morrowind code patch" is required so that the rain dosnt fall through the ceiling as there really is no reason on earth why anybody shouldn't want use the code patch as everything can be switched on separately to suit everyone.

I might look into this. I now have both why I would use this, and why not.

Why yes:
-less mess
-no need for sky boxes and stuff
-I can set environmental sounds which is just what I need

Why not:
-believe it or not, I know more than few people who do not use the code patch and have no plans to do so
-I want green fog and set my own lightning without having to mess with bunch of light markers
-I only think this works that way (based on some games I played so please tell me if it's not the case with the code patch), but if I'm not wrong, if I go under covered area where it doesn't rain, the rain will be gone completely, so the player doesn't see it around the covered area either, the player doesn't see the rain at all anywhere, right? But I don't know how does it work so do tell if this is not true.

To elaborate, player in this cell will never get to be under the rain itself, it should only be seen trough the windows. If the last point in "why not" doesn't work the way I think it does, I might consider setting it that way, which means I won't be able to test it, but that's not as important as it is for people who play actively.

Thanks for advices.

When a player goes under a covered over hang with the MCP patch installed it's still rains around the player but not under the overhang. So it's still very rainy.

the easiest option witch requires no work is to just enable the code patches collision rain wich will just leave the rain out side. this is what happens when stood under a shroom http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/images/26348-2-1250031902.jpg you might need to give the ceiling some thickness as from the top its not collisioned so using the invisible wall should do. its quite possible to only enable the collision rain to those that dont want to use the code patch its also really easy to uninstall the code patch id say to save you trouble just use the code patch you can still do the lighting and sounds it dosnt change any of that, im not shore some people understand what the code patch dose, mostly what it dose is fix what morrowind should of done in the first place and improves various things such as the rain taking collision in to account rather then falling through everything. to as why people wouldnt want to use it is beyond me, if theres some thing that you dont want the patch to change it is easily dissabled so dont see the problem but then thats just me i guess

I see. I decided to simply set it to act as exterior and mention the code patch requirement.

As for the code patch I understand it's invaluable addition for players, but I don't use it since I don't play :P for those who do, yeah, I don't understand those who don't use it either, but oh well, each to his own.

Thanks setting me on the road. :foodndrink:
