Beggars changing voices

Post » Mon Jun 14, 2010 7:35 am

I've had Oblivion for the PS3 since its GOTY edition launch and I have always wondered something. When I'm not feeling like a [censored], I sometimes give a coin to the beggars. Why is it when they first ask for a coin they sound all weak, old, and sick. But when you give them a coin, they are magically well, and years younger and deeper in voice. What's up with that?

I played the 360 version extensively for 2 years before moving to the PS3. That was one of the first things I noticed. The actual voices for the beggars (when approaching) are different. When approaching a 360 beggar, the "coin for an old beggar" styled lines sound much different then the PS3 ones. The actual 'conversation' dialogues are the same.

Another difference was the musical score, not the score itself, but the selections. When I went to Weye, I heard a song I rarely, if at all heard when on the 360. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba0h4Z21wT8&feature=related The preferred selections based on areas in game were different.

From my experience of a year on Xbox before going to PS3 and playing 2 years is that they tend to speak normally on Xbox on almost every topic however on the ps3 version they only speak normally on the subject of the thieves guild.

It saved beth time and money, to get the same actors to speak the rumour topics mostly as well as others.
Then just tag them onto "every" npc with no variation to class, character or speech traits.
I can forgive many things, but laziness when it comes to VO editing is not one, due to the fact of having a very good ear for peoples speech patterns.

I've noticed that with beggars too.

They mumble out "Another coin, and I can git me a pair of shoes" all weak, and frail.

*gives one coin*

"THANK YOU KIND SIR" they boom at the top of their lungs, in a voice stronger than the guard captain himself.

When I turn away, they revert to their frail voice. "Blessings of Akatosh upon ye" they whimper.

Ok I was just unsure if thiswas intended or PS3/all versions of the game glitch. Danger beggars I'm going to kill every last 1 of them 1 day.

One of the Master Trainers requrires that you have donated to each beggar in Cyrodiil before they will give you Master Training.

The voice problem with the beggars is one of the most annoying and distracting things in the game...takes you completely out of the moment. It's sloppy and very amateurish planning and editing.

You can do better Bethesda.

I have heard no less than four different voices from a beggar, in ONE conversation........ They really screwed that one up.

They're all liars, basically. All of them "are saving up for some medicine", "need to buy a pair of shoes", are "old war veterans", etc. They put on these weak, pathetic voices so they can get our sympathy. Then if we want to talk to them more in detail about a particular topic, they reveal themselves. They're jsut ordinary Bretons, dark elves, etc who have found a great way to make some gold....

...So I give them EXTRA money by going into the Speechcraft menu and giving a bribe! Despite the 30 coins now in their pocket, the next time I see them, they're still "saving up for some medicine, needing to buy a pair of shoes", etc.

But it's just like many beggars in our world, who also constantly lie! In the modern world, beggars are looking for a handout so they can "make change to catch the bus" or "get something to eat" when really they're just looking for their next drink or fix. I've actually given money to beggars before who are more honest, and actually say they're alcoholics or whatever.

I've actually done some pretty funny things with the beggars. If they say "one more coin and I can git me a pair of shoes"; I dupe glitch about 30 shoes right in-front of them. What's your size! :P

I've also solved world hunger, dupe a hundred or so "Boar Meat" in the game and viola, free food for all. :D

Haha very nice. One time I just got fed up with em and went on a huge murderous spree through the IC and the other major cities as well. Wonder if the Gray Fox would still be my buddy ...
